Hi-- I'm confused. My boyfriend is in reception at tracy-dvi. I called the mailroom and they said it was ok to send manila envelope, w/ 2 writing tablets, 2 pens etc. So I mailed it and included 20 stamped envelopes too-- They also said a book of stamps is ok so I mailed a regular letter w/ stamps inside. But I was searching here on PTO and found stuff saying stamps, etc. are NOT ok when they are in reception. Could I be misinformed by the mailroom guy? Maybe he thought I was asking about mainline? I'm pretty posisive I said Reception. Will they just mail this stuff back to me if it's not 'acceptable.' Also-- I got a letter from my baby today. He is new there and hasn't gotten any mail from me yet and said they are on lockdown. Does lockdown affect mail? So many questions from me--------Thanks folks!
1 more-- Is there a limit to the amount of mail they can receive? thanks again.

I got conflicting information from SQ when I first started writing, so I played it safe and sent smaller quantities, and separated everything in separate envelopes until we were sure what went through. If it isn't OK, they will ask him for stamps to mail it back, or deduct from his account, or throw it away/donate it.

The rules are different for different California prisons.

Mail.. the on going saga at DVI .. So I see it continues! Lockdown does not affect mail at all. I have a few friends with loved ones at DVI, and it seems that the ole' pony express is always coming up lame there ! I have been told letters in sometimes take upwards of 10-14 days to be delivered. It is a serious problem at DVI.

There is no limit to the amount of mail an inmate can receive. Inmates have a few rights and privledges left, and mail is one of them. So send as much as you want, as often as you want!

Happy Mailing !

xraystar,

I don't know about DVI but I can tell you San Quentin reception does allow stamps. I send my boyfriend large manilla envelopes containing all the items you listed and I've never had a problem. The mailroom person told me 100 stamps is the max but I always send less, just to be on the safe side. If the mailroom at DVI said stamps are fine, then go with that. And MsClever is right... Send as much mail as you can!

Good luck:D

Side note: San Quentin mail also takes forever. His letters get to me within 3-4 days. Mine take 8-10. :(

Hello, I'm so glad I found someone talking about DVI-RC. Alittle late,(My guy just got transfered. But the problem I have is still there! Anyway, I have sent A min.Envolope with writing supplies and I think I forgot to put Return Address, But inside W/Supplies had a papper band around envolopes, and broke so I put a couple of stickers on it to hold. I DIDNT KNOW! But I since then had mail returned for stickers on outside of letters. DO YOU THINK THEY WOULDNT EXCEPT IT?HE HADNT RECEIVED IT BEFORE HIS TRANSFER. Another ? is I sent a money order just before his transfer, They will forword that too, Wont they? (It wasnt a P.O. One, It was a
7-11 cashiers check)!

Hi Shortnsasy!

I always find it interesting.. the No sticker deal. Call me a lamer and you wouldnt be the first.. but arent our little return address label do-daddys stickers? This is an issue thats needs more exploration-LOL !

As far as your money order goes, yes they will forward the money to the new institution, it usually takes up to 30 days!

Best Wishes!

DVI Tracy mail room !!! Argh!!!
They are SOOOO slow!!!!

But yes, you can send 20 stamps (that's one book) at a time. You can also send up to two tablets of writing paper and 2 pencils or 2 pens but only the clear type bics and ones with no little grip thingy on them. Oh, and they must be in their original packaging.
I have sent all of that and it all has gone through....eventually. The trick is to send one book of stamps in one letter one day, and the pens in the next letter the next day, rather than making it look like a package.

It takes a really long time to get mail through to my son, and twice as long if it's got something like stamps or pens or writing paper or envelopes enclosed.
I did figure out if you want to get a message in quick, send it on a postcard or a greeting card. They go right through.

Mail gets out and is in my box 2 days after he writes it.
