View Full Version : My Baby Called Me Shorty-Could anyone explain what that means
opalznsilver 11-01-2006, 03:26 AM Hi, My baby called me his shorty on the phone last week and I been wondering about it. I know that it was terms of endearment of some sort but I'm just not exactly sure the story behind it. I love to figure out things he tells me when I don't know. We are in gangsta love. I am new to the lingo.
Thanks
Stace
mrsdragoness 11-01-2006, 05:39 AM Never heard of "gangsta love" but I'm wondering... How tall are you?
cdmack 11-01-2006, 09:21 AM I can tell right off that you must be in an IR relationship.....Shorty or in the Dirty South they say Shauty.....is not necessarily a term of endearment but something that most "brothers" call women....it's a black thing.....
teacake 11-01-2006, 10:27 AM It's a form of endearment like "baby", "sweetheart", etc. It is from the Dirty South but its not limited to there. I'm from OH and they use to say it here.
opalznsilver 11-02-2006, 05:57 AM Thanks for the info. by the way I am 5'9" tall.
Moeshaforever99 11-02-2006, 05:59 AM LuvMike..
That is what my babyboy calls me..Shawty
it's a Dirth South term..I love it, he also calls me Babygirl..
it's all love girl...enjoy it :)
Hugs Shay
Moeshaforever99 11-02-2006, 06:01 AM I can tell right off that you must be in an IR relationship.....Shorty or in the Dirty South they say Shauty.....is not necessarily a term of endearment but something that most "brothers" call women....it's a black thing.....
Do u really need to say that..I can tell you must be in a IR Relationship??
White boys say it too..!!!
hooddiva 11-02-2006, 07:27 AM I was thinking the same thing
cdmack 11-02-2006, 07:49 AM Was not trying to be offensive to anyone....but I know that is probably the case....was just trying to point out that it was originated by the "brothers"....it's a gansta rap term.....and most black women find it somewhat offensive.
MonsterGirlsMom 11-02-2006, 08:16 AM Oh wow! My ex still calls me shorty to this day and he's as white as casper. Naturally I'm not all that offended, but I can definitely see how someone would be offended by that! My jaw dropped when I read your post.
RAG4LIFE 11-02-2006, 08:28 AM I've always thought it was a term of endearment... I was hearing this term used over 14 years ago in the midwest (chicago), so as far as the origination of it, who knows.
Anyway, i agree with teacake...its like saying sweetheart or baby.
MrsD..you are too funny! how tall is she, huh? lol
Jokerz Mija 11-02-2006, 03:41 PM Well I've never been called shorty as in "sweetheart...etc" I've always been called Mija...BUT I AM SHORT! Don't worry about it chica...it's all good if he's calling you shorty ;) Yea that post was kind of offensive...I wish people would think before they post stuff...hmm
opalznsilver 11-08-2006, 01:45 AM Yeah it is an IR relationship I'm white, he's native american
Peace
MsAkbar 11-08-2006, 04:32 AM Not only "black" men use this term, it is widly used by ALL races. Your statement is a bit offensive "it's a black thing"? It is a people thing. Also, it is a term of endearment, and just something that is said: Like hey miss, just terms guys use. It has nothing to do with ganster love?
I can tell right off that you must be in an IR relationship.....Shorty or in the Dirty South they say Shauty.....is not necessarily a term of endearment but something that most "brothers" call women....it's a black thing.....
Mrs. Evans 11-08-2006, 12:03 PM what exactly is being in "gangstar love" is it gangstar love because he is locked up....boy the slang from other places is on another level....and shorty is a term of endearment....my baby used to call me his shorty back in the day....but we dont use it because im more than just his shorty...i feel like anybody can be a shorty but only one can be a wife
opalznsilver 11-09-2006, 03:30 AM I wonder if you were referring to me when you said that I said it was a "black thing" because I did not say that. Also when I said Gangsta Love, it means that my man is a gangsta and we are in love. I meant nothing to anyone else about it. And for those who do not know what gangsta love is maybe you don't listen to rap music.
Peace
opalznsilver 11-09-2006, 03:31 AM No I did not mean that my man is a gangsta because he is locked up. It's a term from Rap Music.
sorry
jdcjmc1 11-09-2006, 03:53 AM That's why you need to explain what a "GANGSTA LOVE" love is because some people do not know what it means. Oh and if you listen to the song by Baby Bash he sings about it. It's called Shorty Doo Wop. So instead of saying that last remark with an atitude explain to them what a gangsta love is because not everyone listens to rap. if your man is such a gangsta then dedicate this song to him, "daddy i'm in love with a gansgta, daddy i'm in love with a thug. This is old school.
I wonder if you were referring to me when you said that I said it was a "black thing" because I did not say that. Also when I said Gangsta Love, it means that my man is a gangsta and we are in love. I dont find it offensive at all. My fiancee call me that all the time right along with other pet names he has for me. I think its just an affectionate term men use with their women.:(
KARMA1234 11-09-2006, 08:44 AM Excuse me, maybe I am totally not hip or something but what exactly is " gangsta love???? And which part of being " GANGSTA" IS GOOD??????????
I presume I am from another generation ( i am in my forties) but where I come from, being a gangsta is not a good thing, mostly it lands you in jail or prison... My little one watches those videos when he can sneak a peak ( i dont allow him to watch them) and thinks it's cool and I am most certainly trying to teach him that at not time is he going to be a " gangsta" but how about thinking about the Air Force Academy and being a Jet Fighter Pilot instead!! did the terms change? I am honestly not trying to piss anyone off here, and i am sure I unententionally well, but I just dont understand the whole " i am proud to be with a gangsta thing?? Someone please enlighten me, I really do love learning new things, terminology and so on.
Have a great day all!!  :)
PS: we have been doing this prison thing in AZ for 4 years and I have never heard anyone call Shorty at visits or anythng like that! But then again, we tend to mind our own during visits.. HUGE GRIN!!
frankieaz 11-09-2006, 10:08 AM Sorry girls maybe im stupid.... what does IR mean???? Im from London london london!!! i Dont know what IR means...... and Londoners use Shorty........ but i am short... So thats cool i thinks its knda cute!!! ahhhh bless the boys!
daydreamer38141 11-09-2006, 10:59 AM The word Shorty is more common up north...Shawty is fromt the dirty south(where I'm from)..Shawty is from the hip hop culture...rap music(southern slang)not much as a "black thing" but is more common among the black race..it's all about how u say it though...with it meaning endearment..it could be..but you can call anyone shawty:)
daydreamer38141 11-09-2006, 11:08 AM Oh yeah..the terminology of "gansta love" doesnt mean that you have to be locked up or bad...down here in the south.."gangsta love" means that you're down for one another...that you're a rida..that's all it is..so that's why many people say that prison love is "gangsta love" because we are standing by our men...
apf2489 11-09-2006, 11:18 AM Some people look at Shawty as an endearing term, I personally don't like it, and won't let anyone call me that, but it is simply because I heard it WAY to much when I was a CO and some guys talked about their shawty is a good way, but there were others who talked about their shawties interchagebly with bitches and ho's. So personally I don't like it, but many people do use it as a term of endearment. Also it wasn't only black people that used it, so I'm not sure why someone thought it was a "black thing" because it isn't.
apf2489 11-09-2006, 11:19 AM Sorry girls maybe im stupid.... what does IR mean???? Im from London london london!!! i Dont know what IR means...... and Londoners use Shorty........ but i am short... So thats cool i thinks its knda cute!!! ahhhh bless the boys!
IR = inter racial
wifewaiting 11-09-2006, 09:03 PM The term "gansta love" in my opinion sounds retarded. What ever happened to just being "in love." I am riding my Husband's sentence out with him - but like hell I would ever call it "gansta love" - since neither of us are "gansta's" - since when was anything associated with being a "gansta" cool? Why not call it "drive by love" while your at it... sorry, don't mean to offend, it just seems rather ridiculous and "bee-bop high schoolish." Just my opinion.
jdcjmc1 11-09-2006, 10:53 PM Sorry, there were probably things in your day that were just as ridiculous to younger people nowadays. Don't mean to offend but every generation has something that will stick to thier generation.
wifewaiting 11-09-2006, 11:25 PM "My day" is still here. Have no idea how old you think I am. This term is not about the difference in generations.
dezyrz 11-09-2006, 11:29 PM Sorry, there were probably things in your day that were just as ridiculous to younger people nowadays. Don't mean to offend but every generation has something that will stick to thier generation.
And how much of an age difference does there need to be for us to not be considered OLE FOGEYS???
This isn't about age at this point, it's about the way people view the words that are used to communicate.
I would have to say, that when you use the words "gangsta love" it sends out a "picture" that may NOT be the real picture. Why would you want to do that?
No offense meant from anything I have said, but there are other views on words that are NOT stemmed from the generation that you come from!!
june5 11-09-2006, 11:37 PM I would have to say, that when you use the words "gangsta love" it sends out a "picture" that may NOT be the real picture. Why would you want to do that?
This is the hardest effort I have ever put into diplomacy on this site. Ever.
I'm not so old (30), and I know plenty of younger people. I even know the 'gansta love' and 'thug lovin' young people who proudly claim to be both. I also know young people who do not use those terms. The ones who do date a certain type of person and live their lives a certain type of way. The ones who don't use those terms are living a completely different kind of life.
We all know what a gansta is and what a thug is. We can all pretend we don't, but we do.
There are places you will never hear those words, and people who will never use those words. You know who's using them and who's not. Draw your own conclusions.
jdcjmc1 11-09-2006, 11:40 PM Who cares if someone says they are in a gangsta love, that is there choice. Everyone takes everything the way they may want to take it nyways.

jdcjmc1 11-09-2006, 11:44 PM Guess i am in a GANGSTA love because my man is a gangster. Sorry, just because he is we do not say these kinds of things to each other. If you knew me at work and on the streets you would never even knew I date them. Just because I date them does not mean I live my life any other way then the person who doesn't date them. I am very well educated, have a good job and am going to school to obtain a bachelor's so does that make me anymore different then the person who does not date a GANGSTA.

wifewaiting 11-09-2006, 11:46 PM OK. What's the difference between a gangster and a 'gangsta' - is one cooler than the other?
dezyrz 11-09-2006, 11:47 PM I never said anyone was an old fogey.....who cares if someone says they are in a gangsta love, that is there choice. Everyone takes everything the way they may want to take it nyways.
And if that is the case, why say anything about the generational differences?? It's not about age, it's about how you portray yourself to others through your words. If you wish to portray yourself as a "gansta" then by all means continue to use the words you do, it is your choice!!
jdcjmc1 11-09-2006, 11:55 PM I was not put on this earth to make anyone else happy and if that is the impression someone gets from that term being used so be it. I know what kind of person I am and if my man was to ever make that kind of comment and someone heard i am not going to scold him.

wifewaiting 11-09-2006, 11:56 PM Will someone please explain to me the difference between a gangster and a GANGSTA....and if they are the same, why add the STA at the end? If not...what is the diff?

I totally agree!! You can USE whatever language you choose to use!! I however choose to NOT use it as I would not want to portray myself as a "gangsta". I know who I am and IF I had to attach a label to myself so that people acknowledge who I am, I am NO LONGER ME!!

No, Dez. Since your husband is bald, that means you are his Baldie. Wait. No?
june5 11-10-2006, 12:07 AM I think that makes dezyrz 'bald lovin' haha.
My husband is alot older than me, so I can be 'geriatric lovin.'
dezyrz 11-10-2006, 12:10 AM SO MANY LABELS...what shall I do? Who should I be today??
wifewaiting 11-10-2006, 12:14 AM I think that makes dezyrz 'bald lovin' haha.
Hehe, June. Silly. :p
I hope someone will really explain the STER VS. STA thing sometime since we are talking terminology here. Also fuzzy on why it makes a woman one if her man is one. I did not think that it meant a person was one by mere association VS initiation.
jdcjmc1 11-10-2006, 01:13 AM Oh well that's your choice.

Dale'sforever 11-10-2006, 02:02 AM Just a friendly reminder that this thread has gotten off topic and seems to have turned into a bit of an argument. The original poster asked what it means to be called shorty, so let's please stay on track with the original topic. Thanks :) , Dale'sforever

Dirty South is a style of rap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music) music that popped up in the latter half of the 1990s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s) and is based in southern cities and states such as Memphis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis%2C_Tennessee), Nashville (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashville%2C_Tennessee), New Orleans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans), Atlanta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta), Miami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami) or South Florida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Florida), South Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Carolina), North Carolina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina), and Houston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston). Dirty South descended from southern rap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_rap): its inspirations drew from Dr. Dre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Dre)'s Chronic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_%28album%29) album as well as Luther Campbell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Campbell)'s 2 Live Crew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_Live_Crew)'s (one of the first southern rap groups to gain notoriety) nasty traditions in equivalent measure, arriving at a stoned, violent, sex-obsessed and profanity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity)-oriented brand of modern hip hop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music).
Dirty South got its name from a song by Goodie Mob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodie_Mob). Some of the Dirty South music is characterized by its bouncy, club-friendly beats and lyrics generally concerning flashy jewelry, luxury automobiles, women, and occasionally gangster lyrics. An offshoot of Dirty South music is Crunk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunk), featuring beats with loud, pounding bass.
Rapper/producer Lil Jon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lil_Jon) is generally considered the main pioneer of Crunk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crunk) music.
The genre inspired the nickname "The dirty dirty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dirty_dirty)" for New Orleans.

dezyrz 11-11-2006, 12:30 AM Hey there wifey!! Thanks for the definition, I was wondering myself. Apparently when we discuss things we actually want to know what the heck we are talking about!!
THANK YOU!!!
jdcjmc1 11-11-2006, 02:30 PM You obviously referred it to me when you put my comment in a quote. So i bit back, thats what Cujo did.

KARMA1234 11-11-2006, 04:20 PM I wanted to know all of this... I enjoy learning new things and I hate to admit that I love LIL JON!!! how bad is that!!! heheheheheh

mel2020 11-12-2006, 02:30 PM I hope someone will really explain the STER VS. STA thing sometime since we are talking terminology here. Also fuzzy on why it makes a woman one if her man is one. I did not think that it meant a person was one by mere association VS initiation.
In a sense the -sta vs. -ster, it is racial. We white folks are considered to be more uptight, so we'd usually say "gangster". Those "in the know" would actually enunciate less to say "gangsta." Its kind of how they know if you're real (to the style) or not...if that makes sense.
On the other hand, there are those who define the difference as "gangsters" being the old school mob/mafia guys and "gangstas" being the hip-hop types of today.
As for "guilty by association", its because the woman has to know about her man's lifestyle. If she's down with that, she has to be "in the know". So by default, must also be a gangsta or in gangsta love. It means she has probably been schooled in the unwritten laws of the streets because she either grew up on them, too, or has been around long enough to know them. He can count on her, which is VERY important on the streets.
On to the original topic  *LOL* To be called his shorty means your his girl.

Yes, El PAso is in Texas!! lheheheheheh.. Well I asked my " homie" who sits next to me at my office and I guess she is as " IN THE KNOW" as anyone out there period .. (Chola from way back) what " Shorty" meant and it absolutely was NOT , his girl. It is on par with " booty call" here in this part of Texas. So I suppose variations in definitions do and well vary by locations... ;) :p
mel2020 11-13-2006, 10:47 AM Guess so. It can also mean his kids. Ya know "Taking da shorties to da park"
opalznsilver 11-14-2006, 04:08 AM All I meant when I started this thread was to find out about what "shorty" meant to those who understand what it means when a man greatly loves and respects his woman. My man is younger than I and is well aquainted street lingo and Rap music lingo. (I'm not yet but trying to learn it). I know that he meant it as in the song "Another Shorty Like Mine"?? I think thats the title????
Thanks
