This may be a dumb question but I am just wondering....
When we send a letter can we also mail a magazine? I know we can send in photos and wonder what if anything else we are allowed to mail in.
Thanks,
Lin

No you can't send magazines in, although I have sent in a brochure for cottages we are building and he got that ok. He is minimum though. He can order a subscription for a magazine but to the best of my knowledge he has to order and pay for it with his own funds.
I have sent in a calendar I have made using Microsoft and he got that but cannot send in a store bought calendar. You can send articles off the net or outo f magazines, single page crosswords, other word puzzles like that.
Hope this helps

I did find out the inmates can have magazines mailed to them if you order a subscription directly from the magazine. They then mail them directly from the magazine to the inmate.

I think it depends on the prison. At Warkworth, magazine subscriptions go in through the library and then they are delivered to the inmate.

Can anyone tell me if federal inmates (Atlantic Institution, Renous) are allowed to have a magazine subscription?

I believe they are at Renous, I know they are allowed at most other institutions, although the inmate has to order and pay for it out of their own funds.
Hope this helps

Thank you both, LovinJus & Cloutier Michel. To be really sure about it, I guess I'll ask my friend (without revealing the lil' birthday present) or call the facility. They speak English, don't they? Cause my French simply stinks...hahaha

You can either pay for a subscription, or visit a Chapters or other bookstore and have them mail it.

As for getting your letter returned, every staff member is different. If they send it back, well nothing you can do about it.
As for newspapers, its better to send the inmate money and he can order the paper from the institution. That way he gets the paper that day.
It may not seem like much, but in pre-trial custody, or provincial jail, a newspaper is a big, big deal. Everybody has nothing to do, and everyone wants to look at the paper.
If you receive the newspaper on a daily basis, the inmates on the range will decide who gets to read it and in which order. It makes alot of friends, and avoids lots of potential problems.
