NOW that Mohd Salleh Talib has walked out to freedom in sandals he learnt to make at the Taiping Prison, another prisoner has taken his place in the workshop.
Sam (not his real name) sits at one end of Unit Jahitan (sewing unit) of the shoe workshop where Mohd Salleh used to sit, taking on the latter's duties. “He taught me many things ... not only how to make shoes but also how to repair other leather-made stuff such as wallets or handbags,” says Sam, who is serving a six-year jail sentence for robbing a lorry trailer driver along the North-South Expressway about four years ago.
Sam hopes Mohd Salleh will drop by to visit in future. According to the workshop caretaker, Zaihuri Zulkifli, 14 prisoners are involved in making and repairing shoes.
