Greetings:

California info: Los Angeles Unified School Dist. offers a course in Building & Grounds Worker (janitorial/maintenance). I enrolled Tuesday and began the class right away. The instructor informed us that by the end of 2004 L.A. Unified must hire 3,000 custodians. The course will take 10 weeks to complete two evenings per week.

The course is $30.00 but if you receive unemployment it's $15.00. You must complete 60 hours of training to receive a certificate. Beginning pay is $10.66 per hour with great benefits. Also the city of L.A. hires from the pool of people who complete this course. Their starting paying is $10.14 per hr and if you take & pass the city exam for maintenance the pay increases to $2200.00 per month with benefits.

If you do not live in Los Angeles, Calif perhaps the state in which you live has a similar program. I checked their web site and they will consider hiring people with crimial backgrounds but they do take into consideration the following:
1) What the crime was.
2) How long ago the crime was committed.
3) How the crime would impact the job.

But let's face it people who have skills and/or education will not be applying for a position as a custodian if they can get something better.
