This is for those of you who have loved ones in USP Hazelton...

Where are you located?
How often do you visit?
How easy is it for you to get there?
Do you have problems getting there?
How do you get there?
How much does it cost?
How long does it take?

All of the above is for research purposes. I would really appreciate any and all of your input.

Thanks,
Tracey x

Hey 2nice. My fiancé is in Hazelton. I live in Southwest Virginia. I try to visit every 3 or 4 weeks. It’s fairly easy for me to get there (once I can get time off of work). It takes about 5 hours. I go 77 North, take exit 48 (I think) to get onto 19 North, which runs into 79 North then take exit 148 (I think) to get onto 68 East. The prison is at exit 29. Take a left off the ramp, cross the bridge then take the first right. Go up maybe a mile and a half (I’m not good with judging distances, sorry) and you will see the sign for the prison on your left. Take the left there at the sign, go up to the top of the hill and you’ll see the sign telling you where to park (the lot to the left of the flagpoles).

Most people who stay over the weekend stay in Morgantown. They’ve got motels at exit 23 (Mapleleaf, it only has 12 rooms, not much else in the area) exit 10 (big golf resort called LakeView – very nice) exit 7 has some motels (Super 8 & Holiday Inn I believe) mixed right in with a mall (kinda) several shops and places to eat, exit 4 has a Spring Hill Suites. Wal Mart is at exit 1 (all these exit numbers are off of 68). They are also in the midst of building a Microtel right at the end of the road that the prison is on. Should be open in a month or two I think.

A weekend trip for me usually cost just over $200. (if I get a good deal on a motel) I have to fill up my car twice (once to get up there, then once to get back) which takes around $50 (depending on gas prices of course) I try not to spend more that $60 a night at the motel (2 nights would be around $120) You can take $20 into visits each day to spend in the vending machines, plus whatever food I eat up during the drive up and back.

If I may make a suggestion….Stop at the Tamarack (exit 45 off of I-77) or some other place that has the discount coupon books! You can save a lot with the book!

Hope I helped.

I don't think anyone knows for sure what happened. All I know is that something happened last Saturday. It wasn't in my man's unit, so he doesn't even really know. But heard that someone was hurt pretty bad. He also heard that they may be on lockdown for about 2 weeks, but that's just rumors at this point in time.

Hi I am new to this forum I have just reconnected with my first love (we started dating in 1981) and some how we have found each other I haven't seen him in quite a few years he is at Hazelton and my first visit to him will be soon I am not sure what to expect. I am from New York, anyone travel from New York to Hazelton?? I also want to say what a great idea this is, I have read so many letters of encouragement and so much advice atleast now I know what I am up against when I go visit him. Keep up the good work!!

The lockdown was over as of yesterday morning. My man started trying to call me right around 10:15 am or so. Finally got me at noon! Then I talked to him more last night too. :fb: :D :fb: He's pretty sure someone was killed. (I forgot to come in here yesterday, I'm sorry!)

Since the clubhouse was closed down earlier this week, we've started a Hazelton Club at prisonville.com. I hope you all will decide to come over there to join us!

babe s mom ~ The ONLY way to talk to an inmate during lockdown is through letters. Or, at least that's the only way I know of, because when they are on lockdown NO ONE is allowed to use the phones.

NC66 ~ Congratulations on reconnecting with your first love! I'm from Southwest Virginia, so I don't know anything about traveling to the prison from NY, but I will try to answer any other questions you may have. When do you plan on visiting? I hope you will join our club over at prisonville!

If you go on the BOP web site click on Facility Locator. From
there you can get to the Hazelton Page. It has the phone number, I believe the Warden there is fairly new so I don't know if his name is listed. and there is also an e-mail address for the Warden's Executive Assistant. Hope this helps you out. :)

My fiancé is one his way to Hazelton. He has been in Oakhoma City holding for a week now. He hopes to leave soon. I haven't been able to see him for over 7 years. He has been in different prisions in the hole for his protection. He hopes to stay on the compound at Hazelton. Can you tell me how it is there and if it is better or worse then Big Sandy?

Coming out in May - from NV to WV. I haven't seen him in 7 years... 4 of which he's been in. He was in FCI Florence, CO and as soon as I established funds to get out there - they moved him to USP Hazelton. I thought part of rehabilitation was the support and visitation of your loved ones. How can that take palce if they ship you 3,000 miles away?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to what a first-time visitor should anticipate or expect - please share.

Thanks!

I am in West Virginia(Clarksburg area), and I visit (when I have my normal schedule) of at least every other week,. For me, it's easy to get there, it's interstate, and it's only a little over an hour's drive. Usually it costs me around 10-12 dollars per visit for gas.

Hello Everyone!

It's me, just checking to see how everyone is doing. LJ did get out of Hazelton and is now in a NJ half way house. It' is hard to believe that we have survived the ten year haul. Sorry to hear about the lockdown. We have had some difficult adjusting issues since his release. Looking forward to June 10th when he is permanently released. I have wondered how you are all doing

My brother told me last week that they are changing the way you sit to visit at Hazelton. He said they are going to make visitors and inamtes face each other. You will no longer be allowed to sit next to inmate. As far as I know they have not made the change yet, or it could just be a rumor, but my brother seemed pretty sure of the information.

They went on Lockdown Thursday or Friday morning. I heard there was a stabbing, but I have no verification of that. They locked down for entire weekend, maybe longer.

Two comments. First, you exit at Hazelton Rd off of US 68 West, which is only about 2 miles past the Md/WV border, and then you go RIGHT (not left) onto Hazelton Rd, and then make the immediate first right onto Casteel Rd. Second, there is a brand new motel (2008) called Microtel that is directly across from the main entrance to FPC Hazelton. It has free local and long distance calling, free internet, free cable with HBO, and free continental brakfast, for $50-60 per night, and is what I recommend.

Maria, if you want to try to establish a carpool to Haz, I visit every two weeks. I am located in Beltsville, Md. which is just outside o Washington, near College Park. My trip is 190 miles, three hours. I go up early on Sat. mornings, and come back on Sun afternoons. Just PM me if you are interested.
