Interesting article from Prison Fellowship about the Second Chance Act that is going before Congress...basically about needing mentorship/education/rehab within prisons instead of just warehousing prisoners until they are released, having no better skills to live in the real world than they did before entering prison. Might be something you want to contact your representatives about, to encourage them to push for it...

Second Chances and Civilization
A Bill Worth Supporting
September 25, 2006
Note: This commentary was delivered by Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.
This year, an estimated 650,000 men and women will be released from prison across the United States. Because the vast majority of them have been simply warehoused, they are not ready for life on the outside. Indeed, many of them will come out more anti-social than when they went in.
Little wonder, then, that two-thirds of those released are re-arrested within three years.
It doesn't have to be this way. I've told you about the InnerChange Freedom Initiative launched by Prison Fellowship, which has proven to greatly increase a prisoner's chance of succeeding on the outside. Why? Because of the positive opportunity prisoners are given to change their lives. It is but one example of many other things that the government, in cooperation with the non-profit sector, can do to make a difference.
These things are the subject of a very important piece of legislation currently before Congress: the Second Chance Act.
The bill's goal is to reduce the number of those who return to prison and, thus, increase public safety. It addresses the needs of prisoners in key areas: such as mentoring, strengthening families, jobs, housing, mental health and substance abuse treatment.
By helping to create "common sense solutions" to these problems, the Second Chance Act will give offenders a better chance to rebuild their lives and strengthen their families. And it gives communities a chance to improve public safety.
Mentoring is key, and this bill promotes connecting released inmates with mentors from local churches and community groups. The hope is that these mentors will help them in their transition to freedom and hold them accountable for making the right choices.
The Second Chance Act represents an important shift from the emphasis on warehousing inmates toward developing relationships between offenders and caring, moral adults. Instead of simply killing time in prison, prisoners will acquire skills and, more importantly, the moral framework needed to succeed on the outside.
Believe it or not, this comprehensive approach has attracted broad bipartisan support: Republicans like Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Rick Santorum (R-Penn.), and Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) have joined with Democrats like Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), and Joe Biden (D-Del.) to sponsor the bill. And it has the strong support of the president.
Despite this impressive support, the bill faces an uphill battle. Why? Not because of any opposition—there isn't any—but because it may be overshadowed by all of the other more politicized and publicized issues facing Congress this fall.
That's why we need your help. Please visit our website at www.justicefellowship.org (http://www.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0zMjkwODImcD0xJnU9MTAxNjc5NTA0JmxpPTkxMT kwMQ/index.html), where you will find everything you need to urge your representatives to support the Second Chance Act. Let them know that you regard this bill as a top priority. Why? Because in Matthew 25 Jesus reminds us that to visit a prisoner is to visit Him.
And as the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky once said, "The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons." I would add that what happens outside those prison walls says a lot about us, too.

Again, I believe this bill is a win-win for everybody. Society benefits greatly when ex-offenders are able to obtain good jobs and can regains some sense of normalcy. Ex-offenders benefit also.

This is such a great ministry helping those in and affected by a loved one in prison......they are out there doing for those less fortunate and spreading the love of God. I hope others will support this ministry.

Thank you for sharing this. :)

I think I'm going to write to our congressman as well about this.. I believe ex-offender should be able to return to normal life and not be barred forever from having one.. :)

I believe everyone has had many chances in their lives to include the ones that write the laws. I believe every offender should at least have that chance. The Second Chance. These bills will be a great blessing to many families who have loved ones on the inside. Lets pray that they get these bills to the table and get them passed.

Sounds like a nice scam to me. They will provide "training" for inmates, release them, and they won't be able to get jobs because of their record.

I spent 9 1/2 years (straight) in prison. I sat through all the "classes", and took multiple Vocational courses. I am now 7 classes away from my associate's degree....only to not get a good job. I have been home for 40 months now. I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. I have had the same job for 37 of those 40 months. Have a family, and going to college.

I am the "poster boy" for "rehabilitation". This bill is not genuine. The government doesn't care if you go back to prison. They encourage it. This bill is a facade. They're trying to push Jesus and the Bible on a group of people, and they don't live it in their own lives. Tell Jesus to have the CEO of any company to change his policy on hiring felons, then we'll have something. Once the offender gets out and sees that Jesus isn't hiring, or signing his paycheck...

No knock on religion. I believe in GOD. But, when your dealing with ungodly people... The prison wants to pacify these inmates. Make them soft. Thinking Jesus has blessed them with that fry-cook job. Man, WWJD?!?!

Damon, you forgot one key part of the bill. Under the SCA, employers will be prohibited by law from going back further than seven years on a background check.

Well, I like how that sounds. Barack Obama is the only candidate that I have heard mention anything about ex-cons getting a secon chance.

You misunderstand Damon.....these people DO care because it is those of us who love an inmate that support the work these people do. Some of them have been in the very situation you are/were in and truly know what it is like on the inside. They know the very real needs and concerns there are both inside and on the outside and they are putting up their time and money to help those found in circumstances like yourself.

It is the politicians and the public that need educating about the concerns of inmates both inside and following release.

I truly support and am thankful for this organization and others like them that take the time to truly care and want to make a difference for these less fortunate and to help make a difference in somebodies life such as yourself.
