View Full Version : Has anyone followed MI HB 5622?

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything new about whether or not Michigan was going to allow conjugal visits. I saw all kinds of information when the bill was introduced, but nothing further. I hadn't even thought about it until someone asked me about them, and I really had no idea whether or not the state even allowed them. If anyone knows anything, I'd appreciate it if you passed it along!

as far as I know it hasn't gone anywhere. Probably still sitting on someone's desk. I know that Leo LaLonde or whatever his name is made a statement that it wouldn't happen because he doesn't feel that inmates are entitled to that as a right. I'm not holding my breath on it even getting into a committee. Sucks!!

The Sad Part Is That A Lot Of Inmates Are Husbands. Dont They Think That Having Interaction With Their Spouse Would Want Them To Come Home And Out Of That Place.

It Would Take A Lot Of Strain Off A Lot Of Marriages Out Here.

Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but with the extreme emphasis on punishment in our culture presently (national and in Michigan) I simply can't believe that a legislature and Governor would subject themselves to the negative publicity they would get for taking such a step. And I hope I'm wrong....

I was checking the michigan legislature web site and i found this:

Last Action: 9/21/2006 - notice given to discharge committee

What does "notice give to discharge commitee' means?

I can't see it passing because the government is so up in arms about sex crimes why would they want to make it easier for inmates to be intimate. I know not all inmates are SO's but that is the witch hunt at the moment and will probably hurt the chances for all the other inmates.

I found this on the 2006 HJ 84 House Journal Number 84, 09/21/2006. I never saw any kind of vote on it, so not sure why they are removing it for any further consideration.

I hereby give notice that on the next legislative session day I will move to discharge the Committee on Judiciary from further consideration of House Bill No. 5622Can't say I'm shocked.

Wasn't holding my breath either. It's too bad though!. I know I would have enjoyed it and it would definitely give our significant others something to look forward to.

Well, that just sucks. I know that I'm not surprised either. So many people are saying "they're in there to be punished so why should they have rights" but you know that not all prisoners are the stereotypical "criminal". And you can bet that if the shoe was on the other foot, they'd definately change their tune. People that are so narrow minded make me really angry.

Discharge : An action to relieve a committee of further jurisdiction over a bill or resolution that had been referred to it.

On my way home from work yesterday, a woman called in to the radio station I was listening to and said that MI does have conjugal visits. She said her husband is in Ionia and she goes to see him twice a month and they go into a room. Is this true for all facilities?

09-24-2006, 06:03 PM
I've never heard about that. I don't think it's true.

09-24-2006, 07:35 PM
i dont think its true either!!

...MDOC probably said it...they rarely tell the correct version of anything esp. their own rules and regs!

My guy has been in two of the prisons in Ionia and had a friend in another one. I am sure that MDOC doesn't have conjugals! Someone would have said something long before now. Maybe it was taken out of context. Maybe the room that she is talking about is the non-contact room that people have visits in.

09-26-2006, 10:17 PM
Absolutely not the case in Ionia or anywhere else in the MDOC....
