After getting to Stephanies prison everything has gone well. But, every time I get into Texas from Oklahoma I get pulled over by the cops. It seems that they have never heard of Indian tags.I am Cherokee Indian and so is my wife,so as members of the Cherokee Nation we are allowed to tag our vehicles with our Indian Tags. After I am pulled over and my tags are run and come back cleared, the cops want to know why I dont have braids and feathers in my hair. They are keeping me from seeing my wife so I am probably not very polite. The last time the cop ask me that I ask him why he was in a car instead of a horse pulled wagon.Seems they dont understand even Indian adjust to changing times.Steve&kids

How rude is that! Talk about stereotyping! I guess you come across all sorts of ignorance. Just treat it with the contempt it deserves. Take care.

Steve, I cannot believe they actually dare to ask you that! from what I heard from Native American friends, it seems like they are just trying to make you mad, just to be able to arrest you or something. I'm sorry, this might be a very black and white picture, but I've learned a hole lot in the last 2 years about how natives are treated in prison and outside and it pisses me off. I could go on and on about this subject but won't bother you with it.

by the way, do you know about Alex Montana? He's an native in prison too and he started a foundation that fights for the right to practise the native traditional beliefs in prison. I know that many natives are being punished (i.e. Joel Lee Richie) for refusing to cut their hair short....and Alex is trying to fight this

prejudice runs rampant! steve, that's awful! you should file a report with the police department those jackasses represent! cultural insensitivity is a big no-no ~ around here, ignorant police officers are getting into all sorts of trouble for profiling hispanics.

soraya ~ native americans are not only treated badly in prison, but in all sorts of aspects of american life! it's appauling that their heritage, culture, and way of life was and is continually being destroyed by people who essentially are trespassing on their property...

I can't believe how ignorant some people are. Don't be offended by others' stupidity, those kind of remarks just show you what those people are made of. My daughter is Native American and my ex-husband so I understand where you are coming from. I always tell my daughter to be proud of who she is, respect herself and others will too.
