Fans cool inmates

Inmates on Alabama's death row at Holman Prison now have a small fan in each cell, after a lawsuit accused prison officials of risking inmates' lives during oppressive summer heat.

Prison officials had banned fans for security reasons but allowed the specially made plastic fans to be installed following negotiations with attorneys for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which filed the suit a year ago claiming inhumane conditions on Holman's death row.

An attorney for the SPLC, Grace Graham, said Monday it's still hot on death row at the prison near Atmore in south Alabama but the small fans have made it bearable.

"This is not an issue of inmates' comfort. When we brought this case it really was an issue of inmates' life or death," Graham said.

Prison officials had said the prison system could not afford the fans and would not allow inmates to buy them, Graham said. But she said funds were made available by Bryan Stevenson, who handles death row cases as director of the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center.

"With the temperature over 100 degrees, it was really horrible there. To respond was not a hard call," he said.

Graham said 170 fans were purchased for $2,635 from a company that makes fans for prisons. The fans were described as being about the size of a dinner plate.

Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett confirmed the fans have been delivered to each cell on death row. Prison officials had prohibited fans on death row in 1995 for security reasons, but inmates who already had fans were allowed to keep them.

Corbett said the old fans have been removed and that all death row inmates now have the new fans. He also said wire mesh that covers the front of cells for security reasons has been removed from some to improve circulation on the death row cell block.

There are 163 inmates on death row at Holman. Another 22 death row inmates are housed at Donaldson prison near Birmingham and three female death row inmates are at the Tutwiler women's prison, but the lawsuit dealt only with the condemned inmates at Holman.

Graham said attorneys for the inmates will not immediately ask that the lawsuit be dismissed.

"We will have to wait to determine if the fans improve ventilation to the point the heat is no longer a risk to inmates' health. It certainly has improved the comfort level," Graham said.

The lawsuit said inmate Michael Maxwell had blacked out in his cell because of the heat. Maxwell, convicted in Colbert County for the murder of a man and his 11-year-old son who were on a fishing trip, wrote a letter of thanks to Graham.

"It is through you and all of those who worked on this project that we are now feeling relief from the summer's abject heat," Maxwell said.

I have a friend in Holman, who wrote me when they were told they would be getting these fans, I had tears in my eyes whilst I was reading his letter, as he was so excited about them, something we take for granted on the outside, it makes you stop and think, I mean even with fans in the extreme heat we had this summer over here in the UK, (we are not use to it,) but at least we can find ways and means to cool off, those poor guys stuck in a ting cage with no windows or A/C...His latest news to me is that they have put in "comfortable seats" in the visitation yard and also A/C for the visitors.
Since writting to guys like him on DR, it has certainly opend my eyes to alot, and I try not to take too much for granted, such as a small fan!!

Aftdr I read this post about the fans (again) I was thinking about how my husband has received his "winter blanket and jacket" earlier this year than he has in the past. I can remember many years when I would cry because he was so cold and had no way to warm up except to put all the clothes on that he owned (2 uniforms, one which is supposed to be saved for visiting day) and use his towel to cover up with trying to stay warm. It would be about that time when they'd turn the overhead fans on because somebody musta felt it was too "stuffy" in the dorm or something. But I cried thinking about how it is when I am cold and I can either turn up my heat or at LEAST put a sweater on. And when he and the others are cold, there is NOTHING they can do but shiver and "get used to it". I think the saddest part for me came when I cried while talking to him about it and he said "It's okay, I'm used to it." And I fell apart.....because NOBODY should have to "GET USED TO" being treated inhumanely when it would be just as easy to show some human kindness. It wasn't like they have to go out and purchase new blankets or jackets........for crying out loud, all they have to do is pass them out. **sigh** The warden where he is is just plain mean and I am sure without a doubt that she had HER heat on in her home as well as in her office and wore long-sleeves and sweaters LONG before she gave the permission to pass out the sad excuse for a blanket (as well as the so-called 'jacket') for the inmates' "comfort" ~~ Times like these I once again open my eyes and know that no matter how much I THINK I am doing without because of finances, my children and I have far more than we are ever consciously thankful for having.
My two cents' worth........
