I have a friend at Calipatria who has been in the hole now for 30 months. I'm not going to go into the reasons for his being in the hole, but I was wondering if anyone else has had someone in the hole. He doesn't talk much about it, and I don't press him over it. We write and so far we really haven't had any problem with the mail. I would like to know if anyone knows what life is like in the hole at Cali State.

hi, my son is and has been in the hole numerous times. I try to write him a lot and just make sure that he gets a letter package so he can write me back. I also know that he does a lot of reading in the hole. I have found that it works best for us if I don't ask too many questions and just let hm tell me what he wants. I imagine that some things are better left unsaid. One Love.

Did I read right...30 months. According to protocol he shouldnt be in Calipatria if he needs that much SHU time..I would be doing some calling and writing to the Warden if my husband was to spend any longer than the 90 day limit at Calipatria Ad-Seg.
But you got the right idea about not asking too many questions about what goes on in the hole. My husband was in the hole up in Mule Creek and he would tell me how it was. He had his good days and bad. It was loud I think everyday for one and sometimes he would look out of his cell and see guys who tried killing themselves or guys who had anger issues with the cops and the cop squad swarming in on them. They were putting in 2 "silent rooms" when my husband was about to be transfered here for the guys who like to bang things on the pipes or whatever all night every night. My husband lived above one of those guys .. He never slept when that guy was there.
Now to me I let him talk and never let him know some of the things he told me bothered me because some of those things bothered him and he needed to talk you know, like the 2 guys being rolled out who tried to commit suiside. Im sure Calipat has the same amout of drama in their Ad-Seg.
But he had good days too.... like the two guys who got drunk on Pruno....so these guys are drunk and they did have their showers and shaved but they were in ther cells asking each other through the pipes if they did indeed take their showers..getting angry when they thought they didnt and got skipped...Well since they couldnt use real razors they had to use clippers and one missed REAL bad and got his hair and cut himself half bald. So through all this yaking and comotion a cop walks up and sees this half bald drunk guy and confirms he did get his shower and feels for the guy and says" Cmon with me" so the guy says something like "Im going to kick your ass" so the cop says" Youre too drunk to kick my ass and your coming with me to staighten out your hair" laughing the way out with the guy...
Anyway since I was new I kept his mind away from the drama and he wrote like every few hours. Epecially when he realized I was 10 years younger and big boobs..LOL....
But what I did during the lockdown is watch the news or so and write about something to stimulate a conversation for that day..something to keep his mind going. My husband wrote in one of his letters during the lockdown that he really appriciated me writing more during that time and to do that if he found himself in the hole ..
I hope that helps some...Helen

It means isolation.... they are put in an area where those that can't get along with others, or if they got wrote up for something, in trouble for drugs, fights, set up, etc... they have no music, no tv... and they dont get to leave the cell but only a couple hours a week... its suppose to punish them...
Only the strong minded can survive any lengthy amount of time in the hole...
When my hubby has been in the hole... I would copy a chapter a day of a book and mail it to him, copy cross word puzzles, or word searches... I would write him everybody... I would go to a local book/magazine store and have them mail him magazines so he would get new stuff to read to keep him busy... there are many things you can do... copy the funnies each day for him... send him daily oms... etc...
I know another person that was in the hole for over 2 years at Calipatria too... not sure of the reason as why they kept him so long... and you can be kept there that long.. they have to get approval from Warden to house someone that long in the hole and they have to be evaluated consistently by the medical staff to make sure they are sound mind, etc...

Well I can tell you because one of my hubby's buddies just came out of the hole in Calipat and I found out there is only one hole for the whole prison..anyway..he'd still be there if he didnt start complaining he was there and not back where he belonged. In other words they forgot about him. Anyway through his story if he was to spend any longer than the 90 days they were going to ship him to North Kern.
Now me Id be doing some serious complaing if my hubby was on his 91st day in the hole. Its not because I got issues but give me a legal reason to get my hubby closer to home and I'll make every call to do it...Helen
