Can anyone direct me to recent Federal legislation or proposed bills related to sentence reductions for non violent first time offenders? Thank you for any assistance.

I haven't heard of anything. I don't know of any way to get a sentence reduction without an appeal. Once your sentenced thats pretty much it. There are some exceptions for extrodinary conduct while incarcerated buy those are rare. In Calif. if you save someones life ( I don't know if they mean inmates or staff or both), you can get a year off your sentence. Although a prisoner just had his request denied (he saved a staff members life) because he's doing a strike sentence & it can't be lowered.You've got me curriouse. I'll check it out & get back. Bob, my son was sentenced in Pinellas Co. FL circuit court. His ever-so-helpful P.D. says that his sentencing judge will only consider a request made directly by the inmate clearly stating why he feels a motion of this type should be considered. The PD says "there are limited options for relief" A motion for reconsideration is also being sent with the letter my son writes. Just a very basic, simple, emotionless (that's the hard part) motion outlining why sentence should be reconsidered. We know his chances of reduction are limited, but it's all we've got right now.

There is new legislation in the state of Alabama for similar measures except for non-violent habitual offenders. Sorry, I don't know about the federal system. Good luck in finding out information!

Sorry it took so long, but every where I checked I came up with nothing so I just kept looking. I still have not come up with any info on any sentence reductions, thats not to say they aren't in the works, it's just I couldn't find anything------Ken

Apparently this legislation was just a rumor or wishfull thinking.

I've found that until today, sentence reductions and proposed bills to reduce 85% to 65% in drug-related offenses are only rumors. However, there is another matter which could be most interesting for foreign prisoners as my son Mariano is.

It has been rumored that deportable aliens would be offered to negotiate their release at certain percentage of their time, if they accept deportation for life. My son and many others would see that as a huge benefit since they don't plan to live in the U.S. and all they want is to return to home.

Please if anybody finds a reliable reference to this, post here your findings. Thanks a lot.
