ON the grid there was a question about education. What if the person had a high school education, but with a brain injury now has the mentality of a 5-7 grader? How would that question on the grid apply?

I'm not sure how that would apply, the logical reasoning would be that it would be taken under consideration. But if they are following the "rules" it would be points counted off

OK, My guy borrowed the grid sheet from a friend and sent it to me so I could type it out for you guys.

GUIDELINES OF RECOMMENDED MONTHS TO SERVE For certain crime severity level V, VI, and VII offences, the guidelines recommendation will be one third of the court imposed sentence length or the grid recommendation, whichever is greater. The board using its discretion in specific cases, may depart from the guidelines recommendation.

In 1992 Georgia passed a law that allowed for the creation of a performance incentive credit program, whereby elegible inmates can earn time off their tentative parole month through satisfactory progress in education and treatment programs and therough work and good behavior.

For eligible inmates, the board will establish two dates: 1) a tentative parole month and 2) a performance incentative credit review date. The amount of time between the two dates is the maximum amount of time that an inmate can earn off due to performance incentive credits. These credits will be assigned and administered by the department of corrections and will be sent to the parole board in the form of a recommendation only.

The following inmates will not be eligible for incentive credits:
any inmate serving a life or death sent.
any inmate serving a sent. of two years or less
all boot camp participants
all inmates reviewed by the parole board prior to 4/1/93
those inmates excluded by the board for other reasons
offences enumerated in 90% rule

Institutional conduct is an important factor which can affect the incentive credit recommendation. TMP extensions will negate incentive credits and can extend an origional TPM.

From my understanding all state inmates receive a grid sheet.

Mine has a two year sentence, and he didn't get one. I guess this in ONE case where they did as stated.

Can anyone give me any information on this so-called "grid sheet" that determines how much time an inmate will actually have to do before he is released. My boyfriend is in the county jail right now waiting to be sentenced and he is driving himself crazy wanting to know how much time he will actually do once he is sentenced. I know that if I could find this information and send it to him, it would make him feel a lot better. I have looked all over the internet, but have found nothing. Anything that you could give me would help. Thank you so much! You guys have been so helpful since I found you a month ago.

There will be some others that come along that can help more than me but I think there are lots of factors. Like what is the crime? Is this his first offense? Go to search and type grid sheet and see what you get.

I hate to be the one to tell everyone this, but in all the time I did in Georgia, I saw maybe 10 people "hit a grid." The first two were released at reception and they were both drunk drivers that got prison time. One guy I remember got his grid sheet back at reception ('cause he'd been there forever!) and they took about six months off his sentence, but he was still about 24 months over what the grid called for.

I'm a pessimist, but it seems to me the grid was dreamed up by some prosecutor to get people to plea out to sentences they never would have agreed to if they thought they would have to the entire sentence. My sentence was three (3) years and my grid score had me getting out in about 10 months. I did every day of that three years.

Incidently, I was in Douglas County. The public pretenders there are worse than incompetent, the paid lawyers are indifferent, and none of that matters because the judges think they're DA's. It is, quite possibly, the worst county in Georgia to get hung up in. When the counselors in prison tell you the same thing, you pretty much start to believe it.

My advice to anyone taking a plea is to plan on doing the entire sentence. If you get out sooner, that's gravy.

You can help. Make sure you go to visit the parole board at least once. I would wait about a month after they leave Diagnostic. Take copies of letters with you. They will already have them in their file, but showing whoever you speak to that your loved one has a parole plan (job, place to live, etc.) speaks volumes. Prepare like you are going to a job interview. DO NOT wear the Rolex watch. Remember these people probably make less than you do, and they listen all day to people they'd much rather shoot. Be one of the ones they want to help.

Again, I don't wish to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I can't stand to see third-party people encourage inmates to take pleas based on a grid system that doesn't work.

Good luck to all of you,
Kevin

Hey- like Kevin, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the Parole Board goes by the grid as a "SUGGESTION" not an absolute. David's grid sheet put him out at 83 months. His TPM is half of his total sentence. There is no public statement on why and when and how they vary on the grid guidelines, they simply do what they want. I put absolutely NO FAITH in the grid system, and you shouldn't either. In all the work our foundation has done, no one we've encountered has had the grid policy applied to their sentences at all. It's a headache to try and figure out what they're doing, and why. Good luck.. save your energies for the battles you CAN win... and if you need help, we're always here to help you and your loved ones.
