My experiences trying to find employment as an ex-con have been terrible. The only way i could get work was to lie on the application, and hope they never found out. My thinking being that "I was looking for work when I found this job", ya know? Not a good plan if you're looking for a "career".
I know that there are some employment discrimination issues and laws in some parts, so a rejected applicant who is qualified may have some recourse there. But in all honesty, who wants to begin a whole new legal battle upon release from prison?
My best advice would be to look into starting a business... be your own boss. I know that there are some government grants, as well as other programs, that could facilitate this. Some even specifically for ex-cons! I'm sure the info wouldn't be too hard to find online.
Hope this helps some.

I agree with Misanthrope. Though I am currently employed, and they know.
For our peace of mind, Linda and I are trying to start our own business.
There are government grants that can help. We are in the earliest of research stages right now. We will be doing some internet surfing tomorrow to get information.
Good Luck,
