Subject: Fw: SHU Hearing

-----
Hello All,

The California Senate Select Community Committee on Prison Construction
and Operations members are families of SHU prisoners and activists
organized
in a Southern
California committee to make change possible in the inhumane conditions of
SHU's.

We are working in an informal coalition with other groups like Prison
Focus and others. We invite you to join informally until we formalize it.

We are trying to organize buses for the trip north, tentatively planning
to leave 8-25-'03,approximately 11:00 p.m.

Senator Gloria Romero Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Prison
Construction and Operations is holding a Senate Hearing on conditions in
the
SHU's on 8-26-'03, 10:00 a.m. at the Capitol Building room 4203,
Sacramento,
Ca.

For those who may not have heard, Steve Castillo was brutally stabbed at
Pelican Bay by a cellie he accepted, who two days later attacked him about
two weeks ago.

Fortunately Steve is recuperating well and we need to let CDC know they
cannot act with impunity in failing to protect Steve.

Senator Burton has called for a full investigation to give notice
to the CDC they must report on a full investigation.

Let's pack the hearing, we need families of SHU prisoners to testify on
the demands of prisoners to change living conditions there.

Please reply if interested in the bus ride and/or interest in testifying.
Please pass the message to everyone.
Thank You, in solidarity.

Barbara

SHU Hearings, Aug. 26, 2003, 10:00 A.M., Sacramento Capitol Building 4203.
Sen. Romero & ex-Sen. Polanco promised to hold hearings, and Sen. Romero will follow through on it. Polanco will be present and give some history of legislative involvement with the CDC. Dir. Almeida will be present to answer questions. Validation for SHU will be on the agenda. They will have a panel of outside activists_ Charles Carbone, Steve Fama, and a third person. Then there will be public comments. Comments will be brief. We need to get a lot of people out to the hearing _ it's very important, even though no legislation is pending. We need to include women in SU at Valley State!
