The Feds are VERY different from state facilities. I have a loved in a USP in California and you are NOT allowed to send them anything other than letters and money. Anything they purchase, they purchase from/through the commissary inside of the institution they are in. Sometimes they are allowed to make special purchases, but it just depends. Maybe someone else will come along and add to what I'm saying, but as far as i know you can't send a federal prisoner a care package.

TIA

I think it depends on where you are housed (camp, low medium, etc.). You can't send care packages to any inmate, but at least in the camp (it might be the same for other levels too) you can send paperback books from places like Amazon.com. This is the only type of package I know that can be sent and you're not really sending it because it comes straight from Amazon.

At most camps you can send paperback books and magazines directly and NOT go though a publisher. It is only newspapers and hardcover books that must be ordered.

Well There are websites like Amazon that you can send personal
items to inmates. PACKAGESRUS & WEPAK4U....
The question I am asking is can you send this stuff to Taft CI, not a camp.

You cannot send anything but books, magazines, and photos to inmates regardless of where they are in the Federal system.

Ok you can send hardcover books from some place like amazon or magazines from the publisher, some fci and camps will allow soft cover books sent in so check with Taft on that. I was allowed to recieve crossword and find a word books 3 at a time in regular mail, but that was at Tallahassee FCI. Other than these items nothing else can be sent to an inmate of the BOP until release when the family can send release clothes that are 1 of everything and those will be held at R and D until the day or release. If you want to send prescription glasses then a special form is required, same for religious necklaces, if a bible is sent in it must be sent with a form from the chaplin. No personal items will be transported with the person or allowed to be sent. All sweats, hygiene items, craft items must be purchased from commissary. Hope this answers your questions.

cantbe - You'll probably have to call the institution and find out - or ask your prisoner to find out. Most FCI's don't allow magazines to be sent directly - seems like it's the camps that allow that. But each place is different. Zelda

My son is in coleman low in florida and i was able to send him a magazine, it was called low Rider about cars. i tried to send one about motorcycles and because it had bare breasted woman in the magazine it was returned to me.
He says ican send paperback books, but send them one at a time.
Hard covers I have sent through amazon with no problem.

I am going to fpc yankton in a couple weeks. I understand paper back books can be sent but does anyone know how many I am allowed to have at a time? Do I have to donate them to the library after i'm done? Mail them? How does this work?

When you arrive you will go through a period of orientation lasting several days. In addition to learning the layout of the facility you will also meet the warden and other department heads and learning the rules.

At FPC Bryan we were limited to 5 books and 5 magazines, although this wasn't always enforced. We simply passed them around when finished. The library accepted donations but the boxes of donated books seemed to sit in storage forever. It's better just to share them.
