Has anyone heard of any new laws or rulings or anything about being given instead of 1-3 year set offs for parole, a five years set off? Rumors going around the Hobby unit is that they're allowed to give inmates five years between parole chances now. CJSweetwater, maybe you've heard something to this effect or maybe can confirm or debunk this?

If I remember right in the last TIFA meeting, this law goes into effect Sept. 1 of this year, but is true nonetheless.

SB 917 by Whitmire - requires the parole board to review nonviolent cases as soon as practicable after the first anniversary of a previous parole denial. Violent offenders would be subject to parole review anywhere between one and five years following the previous parole denial.
I found this on the TDCJ website....I think Shun is right, it goes into effect 9/1/03.

I hope that what johnjay28 heard is true because that is one of my concerns as well. Sonny comes up in a few years for parole and if he has to wait 5 more years---- it will be hard on him.. Anybody know for sure if it affects those already in the system?

That is usually the way it works. You are only subject to a new law/rule if you come in after it takes effect. I sure hope so, too.

I am praying that Johnny does not fall under this new bill.....
So for nonviolent offenders have a chance at parole every year? Five years in between!!! AAuugg! That is horrible.
My son had his parole review last week and they told him he will decide in three months! Pray for him! He said they weren't too happy about his long record even though this is his first time in prison. So if they say no then he will wait one year to be given another chance, right? A year is so long but I guess they really can't do it any faster then that, huh? They have so many to review.
PS He is a nonviolent offender but does have domestic violence on his record.
