In California, you can go to the welfare office and apply for food stamps and cash aid. They will give you only about 136.00 in food stamps and 200.00 or so in cash aid for a single adult for the month. It's obviously ludicrous, but they also make you enroll in some work-preparation classes AND do community service at a rate of about $7/hour to "repay" the food stamps and cash aid. However, you CAN put that off for a month or so. Also, there is Vocational Rehabilitation, and you can go there and say you're a drug addict (I don't remember if being an exoffender qualifies you or not) and they will pay for some training, but they won't give you money to live on.
