Does anyone have a list of items inmates are allowed to take with them to Tutwiler? My granddaughter will be going from County to Tutwiler this week. I know she needs white tee shirts and underwear. I also bought her some shampoo, conditioner, stamps, envelopes, writing paper, toothpaste, tooth brush, and hair brush. The county allowed her to get the tee shirts and underwear and stated Tutwiler would not allow her to have any of the other items. Anyone know if this is true? They wouldn't even let her have the stamps. Marilyn

That is true. When she gets to intake they will issue her state issued clothing, etc. She will have to get everything else from the commsionary (store). The only time they allow them to take things like stamps, shampoo, etc. is if they are moving to another facility. Here is a link to the ADOC intake. It is in PDF format. http://www.doc.state.al.us/docs/AdminRegs/AR338.pdf

Thank you for that swift reply. It helps a lot to know what to buy and what not to buy. Marilyn

Some counties will allow inmates to receive stamps from friends & family & some won't but Tutwiler does allow friends & family to send stamps to inmates.
Once she gets there, whenever you send her a letter, you can send stamps to her with your letters if you want.
I don't know if there is a limit or not but I know at least 10 are allowed with a letter at Tutwiler.

Let's see ...
The "white box" you are putting together for her ...

White boxes can contain the following ...
(this is not ALL they allow but these items are allowed)

white t-shirts
panties (plain, white)
socks (white)
bra's (plain, no underwire)
tennis shoes (at least 90% solid white)
shower shoes (flip flops) (color, okay but no attachments, like beads & stuff)
bath towel (white)
bath cloth (white)
sweat suit (solid white) 2 allowed
thermals (white) 2 allowed
1 lock (to lock your drawer with) (they provide ONE but each inmate has & needs 2 drawers so if the inmate doesn't have an extra lock, there is no way to secure half her belongings)
radio & headset (no antenna)
wristwatch ($25 or less in value)
3 microwave bowls with lids
16 oz. plastic cup with lid
soap dish
toothbrush holder
6 (I THINK it's 6) bars of soap
toothbrush
toothpaste
deoderant
comb (no metal)
white hair ties

writing paper / legal pads (up to 3, total, I think)
2 blue or black ink, clear barrel ink pens

stamps
envelopes

address book (no hardback)

There are probably some other things but those are the most important items & the ones I'm SURE inmates are allowed.

If you have the money, it also helps A LOT if you have at least a FEW dollars on you books to purchase items from the canteen. So, if you can, send her a few dollars so she has a little money & isn't stuck there TOTALLY broke.
