My experiences with Connally have been so-so. One minute they are ok the next they think you are not better than them. It's the luck of the draw. There will lock down seems like at the drop of a hat (just a little exaggeration, very little). My husband is in general population. He says there are alot of crazy happenings going on all the time but if you keep to yourself you will be ok for the most part. There is a lot of drama not only with the inmates but also the faculty as well. It is just the general prison life with a few hitches every now and then. Hope this helps.

My hubby is also at Connally Unit, he has been their for 15 months also. I have only been able to visit him twice since we got back together in February of this year. From what I hear their is constantly a lot of tension and lockdowns. I agree, as long as your loved one keeps to themselves they will be fine. Rick has been doing good in close custody because he is pretty much in his cell 24/7, hopefully in September he will move up to medium custody. Hope others are able to give u the info u need. :)

thanks for the replies ladies. I was quite suprised that they said my son was in GP. He had been in ad/seg at Byrd. Not sure why they would stick him in GP upon his arrival unless it is a space issue. We will try to visit Sunday and I will report back. We are driving from San Antonio and will try to be there early.
My son always has some adjustments to do so I hope and pray he will transistion into this unit easily. Keeping fingers crossed and prayers going up!

I was at Connally again this weekend. The weekend before the staff was happy go lucky...very pleasant and friendly...today everyone seemed on edge. I can't help but wonder if its because of the Warden on Duty that specific day. I think a lot of issues at Connally might stem from the fact that they received such negative notariety from the Texas7 escaping. Just a thought?

In case anyone is wondering...They have been taking pictures every single weekend! Very unusual. The lady who takes the pics is a CO who volunteers her time every weekend to take pics. I think thats pretty cool.

Thanks for your post. We went today (Sunday). We took Hwy 181 from San Antonio and it took us about 1 1/2 hrs . Probably could have done it faster than that. COs and everyone seemed very good and willing to help. We did have our photo taken also to give to our son! They said proceeds go to the Special Olympics. I think that is nice.
However our visit was disspointing and upsetting...but that is another story altogether...nothing to do with the operations or the employees.
:(

Hello, my husband is at the Connally Unit also. I live in Dallas so I only get to visit once a month. We do get a 4 hour, so that's a good deal. My husband has been there for 10 years +. As the others said, a lock down can happen at the drop of a hat. When the old Warden was there, there so many bad changes made. Now that we have this new one, good changes have been happening. My husband is pleased with all the new changes going on.

I understand how your brother feels. You may want to call down to the Ombudsman's office in Huntsville. Ask them what you need to do to request a move for your brother. How far do you live from there? If you have family (like parents) that can't make the drive down there, they sometimes take that into consideration and move him closer to home. Especially if he has a long sentence. I home this helps.

I would first call down to the Ombudsman's office in Huntsville. Talk to them and see what they say. My husband has been at Connaly for several years, like over 8. We thought about him transferring, but he's been there for so long that he feels he needs to just stay there. I believe that your husband is the one to request the transfer. But call down to Huntsville first and see what they say.

Rick got moved to Connally Unit under a hardship transfer. This unit is about 3 1/2 hrs away from where we live. He used to be at the Roach Unit up in Childress, Tx which was 13 hrs away. The way in which Rick got the hardship transfer was because his father had a stroke and is now legally blind in one eye, and both his parents are diabetic, have cholesterol, and high blood pressure. His mother doesnt know how to drive at all, only his dad but he is not able to drive anymore. They both got letters from their doctor and went through a lawyer and got it sent to Huntsville. It was proven that their was no way that his parents were capable healthwise to make such a long trip... needless to say, Rick didnt receive any visits in a lil bit over a yr while he was at Roach becuz of the distance. In a matter of months Rick was transferred from Roach Unit to Connally, so health issues really is taken into consideration. Good Luck!

My husband has been at Connally for almost 2yrs. Prior to that he was at Telford. He was moved on a hardship transfer, which is a blessing since he is so much closer to me. I try to visit every weekend. Is anyone else on PTO a regular at Connally visitation? I've noticed the Connally thread gets very little action. I'm sure we all can be a little more proactive in posting here to keep each other updated and informed. Especially for those who aren't able to visit their loved ones often. :D

I only visit once a month but the complaint I get the most from my husband is the fact they don't have any college courses available there so he will be getting moved soon so he can complete his associates degree.

MrsMurphy, I inquired about college courses as well for my husband when he was initially transferred there. You're right in that they don't offer them. When I contacted the Windham School district about college courses I was told they only handle education for post associate degree course work. They have a contract with Lee College and offer financial aid. So in other words she told me they already need to have their Associates degree. And that an Associates degree could be attained but it had to be approved by the warden and state classification. And it would have to be paid for by the family's resources.

After that my husband was approved for the electrical trade course there at Connally so we just put the college course work on the back burner. He graduated from the electrical course in May so we're discussing what to do next. Actually we're waiting to see what happens with his upcoming parole review.

What unit is your husband taking the college courses at?

sorry I don't know what I hit that submitted that previous post, but I was trying to post the following:

Hello Cerris25,
My boyfriend completed the electrical trade courses a few years back. He really enjoyed it. He received several certificates. I'm sure your husband will enjoy it too. I live in Dallas and try to make the trip every 2 months now. I did not know about the college courses. I will definitly check into that. Thanks.

My son has been at the Connally unit for the past 17 years. He was in Seg for a couple of years, during the earlier years. For the past 13 years he have not gotten into any trouble. He will be coming up again for parole March 11, 2012. I pray he makes it.
