hi there and welcome to PTO and the military forum!

for the most part, from what i've researched, it is very unlikely that someone would be allowed back to serve after being incarcerated--they usually get a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge. 'offenders' are allowed to request return to duty as an act of clemency (mercy/leniency), but i haven't heard (so far) of anyone who has actually done that. it also would depend on the crime.

i have heard that they're putting a program in place for those who serve (finish) their sentences to return to boot camp/basic training in order to serve again (war on terror, etc), but that is still in the beginning stages and i don't think anyone has done it yet.

it also depends on what branch of the military the person is in, and the need for servicemembers.

you can pm me if you want me to find more specific information. good luck!

k :)

Thanks SKM7776 for your excellent reply. I think it may be an idea for the Military to let someone back ... say a 20 year old serves 5-7 years he would only be 25 or so and could well continue to serve. It would give them a focus and help them move on with their lives.

hi justice,

yep. it would be a good idea. the motto of the USDB (the max security military prison, where inmates with sentences >5 years go) is "our mission, your future." if that is so, i agree that their goal of rehabilitating/correcting should include such programs. as it stands, they waited until my boyfriend had been incarcerated FIVE years to put him into the main rehabilitation program. (this is not including the "_____ Anonymous" group.) five years? if he even needed it at all--which he never did--they should have begun the program within the first few months of his incarceration.

anyway, to stay on the topic, if you find any actual information (besides my hearsay) that shows that the military is actually doing the return-to-duty for military offenders who have finished their sentence, please post it!

smiles,
k

Hi SKM,

I will and I will be watching very hard. Some of these people have served there county very well for a long tim and should in some cases not be tossed on the scrap heap.

Hope your man is doing ok and they are looking after him.

Take care and I will keep you posted if I find out anything re return to duty.
