Anyone have any basic info on GBCI? Are the inmates treated badly by the guards there.... anyone have any stories? What is their daily rutine? When can they have access to a telephone and do they have a time limit? Do they have a limit on how many letters the can send per week? Or how many they receive?

Just anything on GBCI.........

Thanks!

The Green Bay Prison is right in the city of Green Bay off of Hwy 172. Not far from were I grew up. I used to be married to one of the guard's Brother's ( long time ago ). I used to party with some of them:o. They are very crude and rude. At Christmas time they would laugh and say they would sing the song I will be home for christmas. Which I thought was pretty mean. But then they would tell me the stuff that the prisoners would do to them. I guess its a horse a piece. This is a very old building and I think it was called The green Bay Reformatory at one time.

My man was there -- he's been moved now to a medium. I'll tell you what little I know.

Let's see --

no smoking allowed. So if cigarettes are inside -- it's contraband. From what he's told me, cigarettes do get sneaked in somehow. He hated it -- he was on the upper tier, so when someone sneaked a smoke the smoke would rise and the guards always tossed the upper tiers first on the theory that's where it originated.

No limit on letters that they can write. They are allowed to have 20 stamped envelopes in their possession. They are allowed to receive them by mail -- but if you send them you must enclose a receipt and do not include a letter with them.

They have access to phone when they go on rec. It's roughly an hour and only 3 (maybe 4) times a week. Rec is the only time they can shower, too.

As far as the guards go ... as with any other place, they're not any better or any worse.

There is no limit on how many letters they can receive. There is a limit to how many they can keep, though.

They are in their cell the entire time except for rec-time, to go to work, and chow.

For an old building, it's not in too bad a shape -- but then again, all I've seen is the entrance and the visiting room. It looks as though it was a courthouse, and/or school at one time. Being an old building it has probably performed different functions through the years.

They can have two visits per day; four total in one week. The two visits in one day do count as two visits. Visiting hours can be found on http://www.wi-doc.com/index_adult.htm ; click on Green Bay Correc... etc.

City itself is not bad -- GBCI is in the city. So if you're from out of town and visiting twice in one day, there are places to go eat during the time in between the visits.

Hope this helps.

GBCI used to be a WI state reformatory. It was actually built from prisoners/convicts back in 1897. It was used to house inmates 17-30 years old, and it's purpose was to rehabilitate young men through teaching of trades, education, and work.

In 1972, the building became a maximum security prison.

You can still see on the front of the building it states: "Wisconsin State Reformatory".

Hi, My pen pal has just been transfered to this prison and because he doesn't feel so well I would love to send him some stuff. Would be allowed to receive "used books" via Amazon? How about Magazines? And funny stickers on his envelope?
Do they have the possibility to do overseas phone calls? I really hope so!! I would love to hear his voice after four years of just letters.

Have a good day:cool:

I would ask him to check to make sure he can receive the used books/mags.
I don't think the funny stickers will go through. Sometimes they'll send back the letter... they did once for a return address sticker on one of my mom's letters she sent to my man.
As far as overseas phone calls, this may be a possibility.... visit http://www.correctionalbillingservices.com/ This is a company that services the calls/billing. Check to see if they are available for you.

Hi Nicoletta,
You can not put any stickers on the envelopes or letters, they will deny them.
You can send books, but they must have the store receipt included in the package and be sent right from the retailer. I am not so sure on used items to be honest.
I think if the seller has a "store" address and does include the receipt it may be accepted. Whatever is denied will be sent back at the expense of the inmate.
I am not sure about overseas phone calls? All the calls are made collect if that helps any?
My brother is at GBCI so if you have any other questions, I may be able to help you some.
Take care,

Thanks a lot for your good information!!

This will help me a lot and I am glad that I did yesterday the safe way for sending him a letter without any stickers.

I will ask him if he can also receive the used books via Amazon. The reason for it is that I have found a nice book for him about The Netherlands and it was not possible to order him a new one. In his former prison he was not allowed to get used books and they always denied it.

Have a pleasant day!

Hey Nicoletta,
I wish I would have thought to ask my brother tonight when I was visiting!
I think as long as the book comes with a receipt it should be ok.
The address thing is the only thing I would worry about. If the seller uses a store name, it should be ok. But if it just has a name for the return address, I dont think they will accept it. You could always ask the seller if they use a store name, a lot of people do have their own stores for selling their stuff. If anything, you could just ask them to use any made up store name with their address.
If I remember, I will ask my brother the next time I go visit.
But I dont recall reading anything about used books not being allowed...
But who knows and being the inmate now gets charged for shipping stuff back, I know I would just hate to chance it.
UPS is not the cheapest way to ship either!
I dont know if you know this, but you can send him the prestamped envelopes to the regular mailing address where you send his letters with your return info.
I was confused about that at first so that is why I am letting you know... just in case you wondered.
Feel free to PM me too if you have any other questions.
I might be able to help you out.
Take care!

Thank you so much Richies Sis!!! You really helped me a lot!! I printed out the rules so I can easily see what is allowed. I have heard via another lady that stamped envelopes are allowed. I think I will go to do that in the future as I still have so many letters of him with uninkted stampes. I do know that the prices have been changed but it is very usefull to re-use them again and after this I can send him enough envelopes with stamps so he can write me whenever he wants.

In his first letter to me he told me that I could send him directly a money order but the rules has been changed. So unfortunately he had to send it back to me in the Netherlands and I had to send it again to the right address in the US.:hmm: So it took two weeks extra for him to recieve the money he needed so much. Because of his transfer he needed to buy all his toiletories again. Really, this made me so sad and I wished I could have done more for him.

I am still hoping that he will be allowed to make an oversea phonecall. I really don't mind if this is collect. We would love to hear eachothers voice after such a long time of writing to each other. I have been thinking a while ago about going to visit him but his former visits were on a video screen and he didn't want me to come when we have to see each other that way. How are the visits overthere? Do they allow contact visits in GBCI?

He has been such a good friend to me always and I would love to make his life a little easier as he deserves it.

Many thanks again!!

They do have contact visits in Green Bay, unless the inmate is in Segregation... in which they usually are visits via the tv screen... there may be other reasons as well... but general population inmates do get contact visits. Man I don't miss Green Bay's visits though... the tables are shorter than the ones my child's first grade class! LOL...but at least they are contact visits. :)

Thank you Sarafina! I am not sure yet where my pen pal will be. He almost finished his anger management in his other prison and was supposed to go within the next few weeks to GP. Unfortunately he got his transfer so I am not sure what they are going to do now. I hope the best of it and that he will be finally at GP.
I keep my fingers crossed for him.

Yesterday I have been reading the mailrules and I was amazed how many items are allowed to send. I am looking already for a Bday present for him and I was thinking about a TV when he is surely at GP. He hasnt seen TV for more than 4 years so this would be great for him.
Does anyone of you have a good address where I can pay with credit card and that they will deliver the TV at GBCI?

I am sorry for all my questions...

Don't apologize for your questions :D That is what this website is for!
As far as a TV... Check out Access Catalog (accesscatalog.com).... I'm not sure if they require a US issued CC (if you don't have one) or not.

Good Luck!

Hi Nicoletta~
Here is a website for a catalog that I have ordered a lot of stuff for my brother.
http://www.jlmarcuscatalog.com/

Here is another site about GBCI and all other WI prisons. Includes the rules & stuff, should be a big help.
http://www.wi-doc.com/index_adult.htm

I hope these sites can be of help to you.

Yes, there is a seperate PO Box for money orders. They will not accept them if you use the regular mail addy, as you had to find out. Also when you send a money order you cant include anything else, but you probably know that.
I think it is 20 prestamped envelopes you can send at a time.
Be careful about the types of cards you may send. My brother had one rejected cuz it was homemade and had glue on it!?!

Visitation at GBCI isnt too bad really. Like Sarafina said, the tables are so short!!!
But I have never had a bad experience there w/ any of the guards or inmates.
So far everyone has been pleasant.
Inmates are allowed 12 adults on their visiting list, children don't count in the 12.

Any other questions, just ask! That is what we are all here for. Believe me, when I first came here I had tons of questions and this is the place to get answers.
So many wonderful, nice and caring people here.

Take care,
Tammi

I have a few additional questions. My boyfriend is currently in Dodge but I just got a letter from him today saying he is being staffed at maximum status and will more than likely being going to GBCI.

If he is required to go through programs, such as AODA, anger management and cognitive intervention, does this mean he will be in segregated status and unable to have contact visits? I am a little confused by the GBCI information. But it says segregation includes adjustment or program segregation.

So if anyone has some experience with this please let me know. I am seriously going to die if he is not allowed contact visits. He had non-contact visits in jail as well. I really just need to be able to touch him and hug him. I honestly don't know how much more of this I can take. I can't even believe they are sending him to maximum. I haven't stopped crying since I got his letter today. I am just in shock.

From what I understand.. These are programs he can complete in general population. I also think that the AODA drug programs are mainly offered at medium and minimum prisons. Sometimes they give priority status on programs depending on the inmates MR (mandatory release date). I know my man had troubles getting into the AODA drug class at JCI (because he had a 12 month defer, and his MR isn't until 2013). After raising a rukus (me,.. not him).. the warden put him in the AODA drug class afterall (he starts next month).
I don't think you have to worry about not having contact visits with your man,.. unless he misbehaves. I'm pretty much sure that he will be able to do all those classes in general population.
Good Luck..

I am in agreement with Sarafina, I dont think he will be in seg. He should be able to have 4 normal visits a week. Unless like she mentioned, he would get into trouble.
I beleive that most of the time if they get into trouble (fighting, etc...) They go to the hole and usually sent to Boscobel. Like I said, I think...
