Ross811 09-07-2006, 12:09 PM I know in Florida you cannot purchase life insurance on inmates because they are considered high risk. I just purchased insurance for myself a few weeks ago and tried to get some for my fiance. He said that they have to be released and off probation for a year before they can even apply.
Texasfem 09-07-2006, 08:39 PM I know for fact that you can not purchase life insurance in the state of texas for anyone who is in prison, no matter what the crime is.
nightbird 09-08-2006, 06:36 AM I wonder if that was just that one company or all of them. I have not looked into this.I know in Florida you cannot purchase life insurance on inmates because they are considered high risk. I had spoke with a representative that sells for 6 different insurance companies in Florida, and they were all the same. He said he doesn't believe I will find one...So I am going to do one of those prepay plans for my fiance, in case something were to ever happen.
kittenn0816 09-08-2006, 10:15 AM I have been wondering about this as well. We always talk/joke about not wanting to be buried at Avenal State Cemetary! Please keep us all updated and I am going to look into the one that sent the forms directly to the institution for him to sign.

While there arent any questions , pretaining to his whereabouts , im sure it would be best you go about it the right way such as asking if he can have it while incarcerated because if you dont they can drop you as well.
Eternal Hope 02-21-2007, 12:58 PM Also, with insurance, every state has its own laws....
I agree with e wife it is best to be up front with all of it, because if not, you would be disappointed if you paid for nothing. Good luck!!!
nightbird 03-01-2007, 10:51 PM I did meet someone who got life insurance on her spouse from her job and he died, she just sent them the death certificate that was from the county his prison was in the collect on the policy, he had a heart attack, so it wasn't like a violent death or anything that raised red flags, the death ceritficate she said didn't indicate he was in prison. I do want to look into the pre paid funeral/burial plan, has anyone else researched that?

udevilish 05-20-2009, 09:04 PM It has been a couple of year adn I was wondering has anyone found a company that will insure inmates?
SugarGirl 05-20-2009, 09:10 PM Those of you that are getting life insurance through your employers need to get your policy and read the exclusions. Being incarcerated is pretty much standard with all companies. Even if the employer allows you to add the person, if your spouse passes while he is incarcerated, they WILL NOT PAY. You will have spent all that premium for nothing.
The exclusions are in the policy even if they don't ask health questions.
Group insurance is generally Guarantee Issue which means they don't ask health questions but most of the policies read the same.

I have life insurance on my husband through my employer and I asked before purchasing the policy and there was not an issue with him being in prison.
soon2Bsentenced 10-12-2009, 01:42 AM I could see running into problems if trying to purchase a new life insurance policy while incarcerated. But if your incarceration is only temporary, and you have an existing policy, I don't think they would cancel it. First of all, how would they even find out you were incarcerated? Pay the premiums, hopefully you don't die in prison anyways.

okay I was taught a question is never dumb, unless you never ask; so here goes my question.
why on earth do you want life insurance for your husband? Dont get me wrong, I am so pro life insurance, but my question would be why? You knew what you got yourself into when you were with him or got involved with him, why benifit from money if something was to have happened to them? Isnt this whole thing about trying to help them get out of prison, instead of anything else? I dont want to sound negative, but it is a good legititament question...
Just thought id ask
StormChild 10-13-2009, 10:31 AM Smokeyswife, I agree that there are no dumb questions.
From my perspective, I wish I could have life insurance on my husband because he has strong ideas about his wishes after death. Above anything he doesn't want to be buried on DOC soil; he wants a cremation followed by a sprinkling of his ashes somewhere important to both of us.
If the worst happened I'd need to book flights, cars, hotels as well as making those funeral arrangements. I wish I had enough in my bank account to cover it at a phone call's notice but I don't. If I got that call, though, I'd find it.
Don't get me wrong, I will never give up on my husband coming home to me on his own two legs instead of in a box. We're young and death is far off for both of us, I hope. I still like to be prepared, and I wish I could say that I knew the financial angle at least would be covered if the worst should happen.
Do you have a worst case scenario Smokeys, or is it not something you and your husband are ready to think about?
smokeyswife 10-13-2009, 01:23 PM Do you have a worst case scenario Smokeys, or is it not something you and your husband are ready to think about?
I have tons of scenarios that run through my mind and his mind. We are only human. I have my will and things already prepared for the unevenitable. (sp)
I never really thought about getting life insurance while he was in there. It would be different if he was out (just a personal preference). I just dont see the point of gaining money/profit on his death in prison. Instead I rather put forth my efforts and funds toward a positive direction such as hiring an attorney to get him out. My hopes are still high and one day I know he will be coming home to me. I rather put my energy in freeing him then anything else.. (just personal preference) once hes out, then I would say baby, it is time to think about life insurance for yourself.
It be different if it was caused by their error and then there would be a reason to fight and gain profit off his death. I know it sounds really controdicting, but I dont want to benifit off my life of my loves death. I rather have him here.
Worse case scenerario would be I would have to humble (literally in all aspects) ask his family for help. Which, knowing me, I would NEVER EVER would do. I would go homeless before i ask them for help.
Stormchild~thanks for asking and your concern... as for the question 2 thumbs... mom tells me that all the time
StormChild 10-13-2009, 03:07 PM Smokeys, I respect your principles and your refusal to even think about profiting from something happening to your husband in there.
In my case it wouldn't do me any good to ask my husbands family for anything, because I wouldn't get it -- not even if it was for him. So looks like we'll have to keep these men of ours around a while longer. ;)
LamontLover 10-19-2009, 04:13 PM Through your job? I have to ask about that, on the real...my friend (who sells) was telling me that if anything happens to them IN THERE, they won't pay out-something about them being HIGH RISK and insurance companies won't deal with anything high risk or if they chose to insure, your premimums are through the roof.
He also was telling me that some do insure, then once somthing happens, then the story goes like this, "Oh, if we would had know he/she was in there, we would have NEVER insure them!"
-Primamerica does help with saving for things like that.
That is how I have insurance on my husband.
