Can anyone tell me any info that possibly help my nephew who will be going to Powahatan in Virginia? He is at the local jail now but has gotten a number. He is so young and really a good kid. Just got caught up in peer pressure. (long story) Anyway does anyone have a love one there? I guess he is going to be classified there. I don't really even know the process. This is all new to our family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What is he to expect? Thanks

I am sorry you and your nephew are going through this. The world is fullof people making mistakes, just some get caught. I am glad you found PTO as it is a wonderful source of information and support.

Powhatan is a classification center. Expect him to be there a few months. He will then be sent to another facility based on his security level. Once he gets to Powhatan, they will do medical exam before they will release him for visits. I believe the visits are contact which means you can hug him before and after and talk with no glass between you like the local jails have.

Take it one day at a time. Please feel free to ask any questions.

p.s. I am going to move this to the Central Region so that people with loved ones at Powhatan can find this and better answer your questions.

I have visited Powhatan, well, you will get a letter stating that he is there. He will be able to mail home his things to you. After being medically cleared you will be able to visit. Visits are either Sat. or Sun., not both. You are only allowed $20. per adult going in. If you bring a newborn like I did you are made to change their diaper, they provide these for you. Visits are a minimum of 1 hr., so my advice, what I did was get there first thing, because once the visiting room fills up (there are only about 12 tables), they will start asking people to leave by the order of who came in first, and only a few get there really early. If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.
