This will be my first time on a holiday that is not on the weekend. How does this work?
We can visit Sat, Sun., AND the 4th? Do they make appoinments or do we just show up on the 4th? If so, what time does it start?

I haven't gone to visit on a holiday there yet, but I do know the visiting is still the same (8:30 am - 3:00pm) Hopefully some one can fill you in on the appointment deal ( I stopped calling long ago!! LOL)

Do be warned if you visit!! There will not be normal CO's working visiting ( everyone will be going on vacation, so the processing will be super slow :( I don't know how good the vending machine people are, but when I visited Lancaster last 4th of July, there was not any food in the machines nor did they fill them, not even once threw the whole day and the bathrooms were totally gross/dirty!! Hopefully PVSP is better!!

You are correct that there will be visitng on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday that week. It has been my experience that visiting on July 4 (and labor day, also) are much less crowded than they are for a typical weekend day, but i have never been to PVSP, so I can't vouch for that, but visiting will be at the normal times that day. If your visits are non-contact they will have the full usual time available for those visits.

I visited PV last year on the 4th, the great thing is that last year it was on a Monday, so I got three days straight. :) Anyway, visiting is the same and if you call to make appointments they will make you an appointment for the 4th as well, unfortunately that time is up. But you can still go in after 10 with a pass.

The vending machines were the same as usual and they got filled as a normal visiting day, BUT, I would really recommend for you to take quarters and not try to use the change machines in the processing center. Last year I had to wait for almost 45 minutes for the lady to put quarters in the machine. :(

For the rest it is fairly normal and the speed at processing is kind of the same, maybe just a tad bit slower. Have a nice visit if you do go. :)

Don't know about the appointments, but it's true you don't get the usual visiting staff. I went on Christmas and they totally screwed it up because the newbies didn't know how to deal with the fog!!!

So don't be surprised if things go slow just because they're not used to the job.

I'm going this Sunday, I'll let you all know how that goes.

Please do Qwerty, I can't go for the weekend but I want to go on Tuesday the 4th, so let us know how that went please.

I'm going this Sunday as well...( I am the fat lady with all the tattoos!! :D LOL) though, I am not looking forward to it. Hopefully it won't be too crowded!!

The 4th was great. Most were the regular staff greeting all with the usual smiles. I didn't have an appointment. I was in and sitting with him by 9:45am! I wore my foot brace and walked in. I didn't want to waste time waiting for the chariot to arrive. (D yard for us) The machines were empty but filled by 10:30 and ice cream at 11:30. I don't remember if they came back to refill. We were comfortable with the weather, scrabble, dominoes, food, drink, and no over crowding. I'd do it again (and will for the next 20 years!). We even got to stand in the shade for the short time we stood outside. It went very fast. We were blessed. -C

I'm so glad to hear you had a good visit... it was pretty smooth on Sunday too. Just curious what time you got there... I've never been in that early w/o an appointment.
