When I forst joined PTO I didn't think that I would ever come into a couple of different sections. The Lifer Forum was my worst nightmare come true when Hubby was still in county. Now... It is a great comfort to me to know that if I really need to let go, and cry while typing, that is the place I will be most understood.

Now, I understand why we have this section as well. I never considered that there would be a problem with my David and I because we are interracial. It was never an issue when we were dating five years ago. We went out, ate meals out, had a great time when we did, and it almost never occured to me that we were interracial. (I am hispanic >but very very light< and he is a black man)

I have never seen such blatant out and out racism in my life, not until I became involved with the DOC. I am in complete shock. I have never faced anything like this before, and I am not really sure how to handle it. A New Development in the crazy life of an inmates lady.

Unfortunately intolerance for mixed race families is alive and kicking in many states prisons. I've seen it myself many times in visiting rooms here in
Michigan and can only shake my head in disgust. It has gotten better, but there's still a long road to go down to make things better... but it can be done, even if its one step at a time!

I handle it with as much grace and decorum as possible. I ignore people who stare. I concentrate on my husband. The rest is pretty elementary, at least for me.

If only the world could grasp the meaning of DIVERSITY then we would have world peace.

Revisiting this thread to say this is the reason why this forum was created. It's sad the DOC would try to discourage any interaction that is good for the inmate, IRR's or otherwise...

And just to think this madness may never go away, but I cant imagine it not, there are so many mixed kids out there one day we will probley all be mixed. Then there hopefully wont be any issues like these stay strong!!
