ocean 06-21-2006, 03:48 AM that's cool, it is just at the fl uci, they can only recieve stuff in the mail thru us postal service, and i have read on a couple of sites relating to this that some of those online stores may post thru another provider...including amazon...but i will try and find out anyway...thanks
DaveMoff 06-21-2006, 05:41 PM Amazon's "Basic" shipping is usually via UPS--I've had problems with that at some facilities. They may send via US mail if you ask--haven't had a chance to try. Have never used Barnes and Noble and so cannot speak for them.
Some facilities also allow inmates to receive only paperbacks--might be worth looking into. I've also tried to have used books sent to a pen pal who was fond of reading stuff that had been out of print for awhile. Alas, the packages were always sent back.
suzeg3 06-22-2006, 07:53 AM Dave:
Amazon sells used books too, right? Are those not acceptable either?
YapYap 06-22-2006, 08:57 AM No, those are sent out by citizens who are selling the books, not Amazon. And in my experience they use padded envelopes and those aren't allowed in prisons, I think no state allows them.
DaveMoff 06-22-2006, 12:43 PM Exactly--used books sold "by" Amazon are sold by other booksellers who pay a fee to list their items on Amazon's site. Hadn't thought about the padded envelopes being a possible problem, but I've tried to send used books a couple of times, both times from large booksellers, and both times they were returned.
Sad, really, as there really are some serious readers in prison and a lot of material out there that just isn't in print any more. I have for many years imagined hell as a place where there are no books.

and only shows reruns of "The Love Boat" :o
Moeshaforever99 06-22-2006, 09:09 PM I (http://www.barnesandnobles.com) have always used barnes and noble and I love them, they send them usps..
ocean 06-23-2006, 05:04 AM thanks for the heaps for the help, i might try amazon first and see how it goes, and i have read on one of the sites that only paperbacks are acceptable and if you send hardcover they will be stripped before given to the inmate! so i will make sure i only get softcover, also is it okay to send cd's? i know they can only have so many at the time or so i have read, does anyone know about this? Also you mention about used books being sold thru amazon, that people pay a fee to list, are they actually distrubuted by amazon, or the seller? thanks guys!
DaveMoff 06-23-2006, 01:03 PM To my knowledge, anything used that is sold through Amazon is shipped by the original seller. I've never dealt with anyone who could receive CDs--hopefully someone else will have had experience with this. Yes, I think sticking to paperbacks would be best unless you know you can send hardcovers--besides, paperbacks tend to be less expensive so you can send more of them!
ocean 06-24-2006, 05:11 AM well it will be great if anyone has info on the CD's, and iwill have to have a look around and try and remember where i was reading about them, because i know it said that inmates can have up to 12 at time, so i will have check and see what i can find.....also you say the used books are sent to inmates by the original seller, wouldn't that be the reason that they are unable to recieve them?, as i know from the different bits i have read that inmates may only recieve books packaged and distributed by the publisher, or company to which are selling them? so maybe it is not that they are second hand books, but that they are not sold from any company, which would be like me sending books from home.....sorry if that sounds all a bit confusing, but i am just trying to work out the reasons of not being able to recieve the books you sent!!! well i will see what info i can find out over the weekend, i have a friend who may be able to help me out....
brooks 06-24-2006, 01:59 PM I found a site for cheap books. They were sent in padded envelopes to me. Alibris. There is also Edward R. Hamilton(Bargain books).
