Jena_1959 08-13-2003, 11:36 PM Hey there! I was a self surrender in 2000, but I went to Pekin, Illinois. I have only heard good things about Alderson WV. I have several friends there. Your time will go by fast. Take money with you, because you will need to purchase items from the Commonsary. Let me give you a bit of advice, stay clear of trouble, and take up knitting or something. Take phone numbers and addresses of those that you want to write, they will allow soft back books in at your surrender, that includes a bible. You can even try wearing a cross necklace, they may let you keep it. It is very scary when you arrive, but keep your head held high, because in most everyone is very nice. If you smoke just ask and they will get you smokes until you have a chance to buy some. I would be will to talk to you, if you need a shoulder to lean on, God knows I needed many of them. Just do not be scared, and for god sakes keep a positive and good attitude. Stay strong, because the strong surive. [email address removed by moderator per PTO policies-- PM member if you wish}

Thanks so much for your reply. I've heard also that Alserson isn't such a bad place, I can't say I'am looking forward to going, but I willl actually be relieved to go and get it over with.I've heard about that don't be scared thing. I'am not scared of going to prison, I've just never been away from my husband or children before, now that is scary! How was Pekin? I thought they would have sent me there because it's closer to my home. How much time did you have to do there? And what are you doing now that your out? Hope everything is well for you.

loisana 07-24-2004, 09:32 AM it's been some years since i spent just a few months in alderson. it was a dead cinch then but i suppose it depends on how the current warden wants to run it. the main advice i have is:
1. don't complain. there are women there doing big time and they don't want to hear it.
2. for a prison, the food is excellent. like a cheap cafeteria. don't complain about the food either.
3. in fact, be quiet for a first few weeks and watch how it's done.
when i was there you wore your own clothes. you'll have to call up and ask about that. also, the campus is big and very green. pretty. there were girls roller scating on the grounds. ask about that too. if you could learn to inline scate that would be a kick.
i met lots of nice women. you could easily climb over the fence and walk away inbetween counts, but there's nowhere to go. one road in an out, high in the mountains, 30 miles from the nearest town and as soon as you are missed the word is out in the community and the local hilbillies fan out to grab you and bring you back for the reward. you'll do fine if you just use common sense. good luck.
stillmommysgirl 07-27-2004, 02:16 PM I resent the mark about hillbillies. And the next time you want to post on here try to at least change names before you answer yourself. This is a board for support not name callin and putting people down. In my neck of the woods if thats what you want to call it, you put down a hillbilly u get a can of ass whoopen opened up on you. Alderson is actually a nice place to be if you gotta spend time. People including myself come on here to get support so either give or get u dont do what u just did. Remember next time at elast change names before you act like someone replied to u. Thats some good advise from a good old hillbilly!
BillnDenise 07-27-2004, 04:01 PM I am offended by the remark about 'hillbillies'. I am a life-long West Virginian, but FAR from being a 'HILLBILLY."
With that being said, I have heard that Alderson is not so bad. I've never experienced any type of prison life, myself. However, I know a few people who have been there and they say it's OK. Good Luck!!
