OKLAHOMA----execution
Inmate executed for 1994 murder
In McAlester, a man who fatally beat a Lawton woman he said was rude to
him was executed Thursday for her 1994 murder.
Jackie Lee Willingham, 33, was pronounced dead at 6:09 p.m. after
receiving a lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
"I want to apologize to the Van Wey family. I'm so sorry for the pain I've
caused you," Willingham said before his execution. "I hope by my death you
find some closure and one day forgive me. For my family, I'm so sorry for
this. I love you."
Willingham then looked up and said, "OK, I'm ready."
Early Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Willingham's request to
stay his execution.
The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted last month in favor of granting
Willingham clemency and asked Gov. Brad Henry to stay the execution. Henry
rejected the request.
Fred Staggs, Willingham's attorney, argued jurors should have been given
the option to convict Willingham of 2nd-degree murder for what Staggs
described as a crime of passion.
3 death penalty protesters were arrested Thursday at the state Capitol
after a rally in opposition of Willingham's execution.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers assigned to Henry's security detail took
the demonstrators into custody as they walked down a hall toward Henry's
office.
They face misdemeanor charges of disrupting a state office or business.
In McAlester, members of Van Wey's family gathered at the prison, some
still struggling to understand the crime.
"I think it would be possible to separate the actions from the person,"
said Lance Johnson, Van Wey's nephew. "I'm sure he knows how regrettable
his actions are. I just have a sense of great sadness that he chose to do
the awful hostile thing that afternoon."

Capital punishment too is legalised murder, barbaric and demeaning which belongs in the 19th centrury - not the 21st!

Enjay 07-26-2003, 07:38 PM Thank you all!!
I just got back after a 20 hour drive. Jackie kept his sense of humor tell the last!! He went out with dignity and grace. Oklahoma can kill his body but not his spirit!!!!!! I talked with him for quite a while on Wed. and I gave him all your prayers. He sent his thanks. He is free of the chains that have bound him these past 8 years. He is a very special person. I'm proud to have known him. I'm glad I was able to be there for him. The visit was so natural and we talked about alot of serious things but always kept a sense of humor about it all. He was thinking of others, always. He told me not to let Oklahoma steal my joy, to live life to it's fullest and be happy. He asked me to promise him I would. I have learned alot from Jackie and one thing I have learned is to be honest so I told him it would take some time, but that I promised. Another thing I learned from Jackie is that no matter how bad off you are, there is always reasons to be thankful. He was thankful for his family and friends, and all the people that cared about him and prayed for him. He has changed my life and the way I look and feel about things. He has touched many. Like a stone skipped across the surface of a pond. The ripples go on forever!! He is gone from this earth, but he will live on in a lot of hearts. I'm glad mine is one of them!!! Words cannot express how much I will miss him, but that is just a selfish thing. He is in a much better place, surrounded by love...no hate. Thank you all again for all your prayers! They meant alot to him!! Love and hope for a better future for us all, Enjay

freedom anjel 07-27-2003, 10:03 PM All who hand out mercy, or the lack thereof, will receive the same from God one day, just as they will receive the same judgement they dole out so heartlessly.
Jackie is in a much better place and his repentence will bring him through the gates!! Praise God that Jackie touched so may lives in such a special way. Thank God for his peace.
"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"
MommaHen 07-28-2003, 07:48 AM Enjay my friend I still am reeling from the injustice Gov. Henery Showed and Jackie couldnt have asked for a better friend than you! He was and still is in my mind and I want to share with you the words of condolences I recieved thius weekend at visit since Terry knew that I was friends with you and had told several of the guys in there about my friends that hads showed up looking for me that weekend who was their to see Jackie. They held a prayer session for him and many came to me at visit and asked that I please take the time to pass on their condolences to his friends. I know this doesnt really ease the hurt nothing but time can do that but I myself thought it was a touching tribute that so many took the time out of their visit to send you all words of comfort and I hope it does help in some small way! Jackie will not be forgotten and I will continue you to keep you and all his friends in my prayers. Terry especially wanted to express his saddness over the death of Jackie who although I never meet in person myself from you ,crystal and cherokee I feel I knew. May God walk with each of his family and friends.
They may silence one voice, but never the whole choir. My prayers go all who are suffering this terrible loss.
