I would call and ask them what visiting hours are. What is FCI? I know where Pekin is but not what FCI is. As to what to wear...wear a lot...nothing short or see through...they are very strict on what you can wear.

you can go to the idoc website and see if there visiting rules are on there. or call and ask what the visiting hours and policies are.

Hi Manda,

My husband used to be at FCI Pekin, so I can tell you what I know - but things might have changed since then. Your loved one should have direct access to all the visiting rules and regulations and can zerox a copy of those for you and then send them to you. You can also call the FCI directly and ask them any questions you might have. Regulations are changing all the time. Pekin used to have an outdoor area where you could smoke and eat during the summer - but I heard they closed it and now smoking is not allowed there. Also - they are very strict on touching, kissing and what you wear - so be sure to understand these rules clearly. The inmate can be sent to the hole if you disobey any of the rules. Also be sure to ask what kind of money the vending machines take. Sometimes they will only accept change - and other times they will accept only $1 bills. Sometimes there is a change machine and other times there isn't. Don't get caught with having only a $10 or a $5 and no change. Also - you will have to have a clear change purse so that the CO can see inside. They will also limit other things like whether you can wear a coat, use an umbrella, or bring in items for a baby. Usually no makeup or brush or anything like that is allowed inside. Visiting hours vary as do the days of the week from institution to institution and so do the rules. You will have to go through a metal detector at Pekin - so if you wear a lot of jewelry - be prepared to take it all off. Underwire bras have been known to cause the machine to go off, and so do some kinds of shoes. Dress modestly or they'll send you home. I have been doing this for 7 years and have been through 5 prisons with my husband. As an inmate's security level drops -he may be transferred from a one level to another. My husband started out in Pekin (which is a Medium), dropped to a Low - went to Ashland - dropped to a Camp - went to Camp in Ashland, transferred to a Camp in Duluth, then after an incident - was sent to Florence - which is a Medium. He will be going back to a Low or Camp next July and will once again be transferred to a new place. So, depending on an inmates prison time - he may not stay in the place he started out at. Be prepared for that to happen. Good Luck on this difficult journey. Raven
