GREAT SITE!! bookgirl 06-14-2002, 07:01 PM Someone who works for Evercom, the phone service that NC prisons use, told me one way to cut down on the cost of calls. She said this is legal and ethical, but it just wasn't worth the hassle for us. 1. Find someone you trust who lives in the local calling area of the prison where your loved one is incarcerated. 2. Ask them to let you install a second phone line at their home. 3. Have call forwarding put on the new phone line, and set it up to forward all calls to you at your home. 4. When your loved one calls that number, it is a local call, and you will be charged the local fee, but the call will be transferred to your home phone. This means you will have 2 phone bills - one for your home phone and one for the phone at the friend's house. All of the calls from the prison will be on the bill for the phone at your friend's house. Your calls from the prison to the friend's phone will be local, BUT remember that the forwarded call is still long distance. However, the forwarded call will probably be at a much cheaper rate than the prison rates because it's coming from a residence phone instead of a prison phone. This phone would have to be at someone's house that you really trust because the phone will be in your name. If the friend uses the phone for long-distance (or 900 numbers) the bill will come to you! This might benefit some of you, but we discovered it would cost about the same as just letting him call my house directly. If cell phone companies would ever allow us to accept collect calls on our cell phones, we could do this with our cell phones! We'd just need to get a cell phone number in the same local calling area as the prison, and, with the right calling plan, every call we'd get from the prison would be local. Here in NC, local collect calls from the prison are less than $1 each. Our long-distance calls from the prison are $3.50 each. If we can't beat 'em any other way, maybe we could get the cell phone companies on our side! Sexesweet 06-15-2002, 01:03 PM thanks sherrie i order on line i hope it works out |
