Today is my son's 18th birthday and he'll be spending it tonight in the Harris County jail. My heart is broken. Drug charge (two prescription pills) and probation, and then his probation was revoked. He's only supposed to be there a short time, but I'm so worried about him getting hurt. We wanted to admit him to an in-house treatment facility, he's been seeing a counselor for substance abuse, depression, anxiety, etc. But the judge ordered jailtime. I'm worried, scared... I've read about the overcrowding, the violence. Has anyone had any experience on how teens fare in Harris County?

Well it isn't a great place to be no matter what the age is. Tell your son to stay strong ,keep to himself and keep his mouth closed. Hopefully he will get out soon. Why not see about getting him into a SAF program, instead of county jail?
Things will get better for you and your son soon. Just keep money on his books and keep writting him to keep his spirits up, because he won't get any help in county unfortunatly. DO you have a lawyer?

18 years old is considered an adult thats how the lawd looks at it, if he was 17 he would be in juvie. Overcrowding and violence is something that happens in jails and prisons, its best if he minded his own business and sticks to himself.

Harris County SUCKS and yes, it's dangerous. If he minds his own business and stays to himself, he should be OK. VISIT DAILY is my suggestion. I did and it does make a difference when they know you are there.

On the women's side the barely legal youngins were put together in what we called the "baby tank". I'm not sure if that's how it is for the men though.

There is a youngster tank for the boys (under 18). It is still full of thugs and wannabes. Not trying to scare anyone but Harris County is a BAD jail in so many ways. VISIT YOUR LOVED ONE REGULARLY AND RAISE HELL if they are mistreated. That is my advice. And don't be afraid to contact the TEXAS STATE COMMISSION ON JAIL STANDARDS if they ignore your requests. I was up there A$$ many, many times and it made a difference.:blah:
