Ok everyone this an update to the California Family Visiting Petition.
Please...please if I'm violating PTO's policy in any way. Could someone please pm me and I will edit out anything that I'm suppose to. This cause is way too important not to post. Everyone has been really excited about this project.
Thanks!
"Here is the update on the Petitions for Family Visiting:
When the Secretary of State issued the Title and Summary, they also included language about the potential cost of implementing the program as "a couple of tens of millions of dollars" (this to 'provide' the housing needed for FV's). Because we feel that is not correct (all the prisons already HAVE the units), and will mislead the public against the Initiative, we are taking steps to change/correct that issue. This will involve getting a new Title and Summary, and when that is official, the time clock will start again for getting the signatures.
As to the 300,000 signatures rumored to be collected: NOT TRUE. We never even started collecting signatures. The cost of getting the petitions printed and distributed is around $3000. We are nowhere NEAR that amount of funds at this time, and if we do not raise enough to pay for the petitions to be printed, the Initiative will die before ever getting to a ballot. Please understand that the Petitions have to be ORIGINAL forms from the printer, NO PHOTOCOPIES. This is why we can't do anything without funds.
Myself, and the CFI (California Families for Inmates) are working closely with Carmen (Rancho Cordova) to put this thing together. As soon as there is something to "run" with, we will be sending out mass emails and calling for help and signatures. In the meantime, we need DONATIONS.
Donations may be sent to California Families for Inmates, PO Box 5095, Diamond Bar, CA 91765.
Please distribute this update to as many as possible on your lists. The prison families need to really pull together to make this happen, or we will just stay stuck in the same spot we have been for years.
Thanks.
Cathy Langston,
CFI Secretary/Treasurer
IFC, Calipatria
CFI has been in existence since last year when they hosted several IFC training sessions. This year, we organized and advertised the IFC Training in Fresno, and then CaPP took it over at it's presentation. Many of the members of CFI Board are people who have been in prison advocacy in CA for years, and are well-known and reputable."
