View Full Version : California Prisons Not Accepting Books
latinastar 05-18-2006, 06:19 PM Yesterday I tried several Barnes & Noble stores in New York City to get them to send some books to a prison in Calif. They said that for a month now they have stopped sending either hard cover or soft cover books to prisons because the books are either sitting in the mail room or are just not being delivered. Also, those people that are sending the books are having a hard time being reimbursed for books that are not delivered or books that are not returned back to Barnes & Noble. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
LeBeau 05-18-2006, 06:27 PM No, but then I use Borders for my book purchases.
Sanchez06 05-22-2006, 12:55 PM Not that I know of. I just went to Barnes and Nobles three weeks ago and I got my husband 2 books. He receieved them like in 2 weeks!!!!!
Sassy7 05-22-2006, 01:56 PM I went on line and sent my brother a couple of books and I used Amazon.com and he has already received the soft cover books. I had no trouble ordering them and he had no trouble receiving them.
20yrnightmare 05-22-2006, 01:57 PM Yes, Calipatria... in one year's time six book shipments I have sent have not been delivered to my son, only (2) shipments were returned back to the book seller.
Inmates in your prison might want to think about filing a 602? complaint form.. Hope this helps. Our problem stems from books going thr R & R instead of being delivered with the mail.
William'sBaby 05-23-2006, 12:33 PM I just sent my man 5 magazines and two books from Barnes and Noble. I sent them directly from the store and he got them within 5 days. I guess it all depends on the prison and how efficient and fast the mailroom staff is at getting the goods to the inmate.
Laura, William'sBaby:heart:
I use Amazon and I've never had a problem.
Jordanrae 05-23-2006, 06:24 PM I also have sent my man books directly from Amazon (to Avenal) and have never had a problem. He got them pretty fast....
I use Amazon and I've never had a problem.
FRIENZTODAEND 05-28-2006, 12:40 AM I have sent books from Amazon.com to KVSP, and he has never had a problem getting them.
qwerty 05-28-2006, 02:00 AM At Pleasant Valley and Lancaster, I have sent books from Barnes & Noble's web site, no problem... no hardcover allowed though. I just sent books to PV a week and a half ago and he already got them.
Call the mail room and ask what they accept!
TIA4TWO 05-28-2006, 03:32 AM Amazon is the best. I usually send books through them and they usually get there within a week or so. I send magazines from Barnes and Noble and have never had a problem. The mailroom staff where my loved one is are real good about getting him the books/magazines I send relatively quickly. How did I get so lucky?????

TheGeneralsWife 06-08-2006, 05:24 PM I go to a mom and pop bookstore by my old house and they are SOOOOO good. They will even fins special order books for my husband that other places have a hard time getting. I just went in one day, explained what i need them to do and I have never gone anyplace else since then. I have refered a bunch of folks there too just because they will cut the covers off if you need them to and do all that kind of stuff.
zunigan 06-18-2006, 04:05 PM I send them to Avenal, and I buy them on line and have them shipped from there. I have ordered 6 times since last July and all have been recieved.
Barbara 06-23-2006, 12:48 PM I sent books from RandomHouse on May 10th and from Barns&Noble on June 13th and neither of them has gotten to him yet:( I guess he will just have to file a complaint. They are telling me that they have not received the book at the prison so now RandomHouse is re-sending it with paperwork to prove it has gotten there. Barb

If he's in reception, he cannot recieve books at all, but you can start a magazine or newspaper subscription.
If he's been mainlined, I'm not sure what the limit is but I know 3 at a time have been sent with no trouble.
ixqgod 07-01-2006, 12:22 PM I know, I'm late on this one:
Call the prison directly. Ask for the mailroom. (during normal business hours) I have sent in books, hard and soft covered, from different vendors. They follow the rules for the prison and no problems. It just might be the prison you are sending the books to.
If you think it's the mailroom that is at fault, talk to the supervisor, then the assistant warden! Not getting their mail is wrong. Technically, the mailroom is an extension of the US mail! They are not suppose to hold it up. It's understandable if they are lacking in staff but otherwise, it's against federal law. -C
JamiesFeatherwood 07-06-2006, 01:26 AM only sent my jamie two books both were through barnes and noble. the second book was tracked that the prison (salinas) recieved it and signed for it on May 12th. it is now july 7th and he still has not recieved it!!!!! i called R&R twice. once i spoke to a girl and she was suppose to call me back. second call i actually talked to the sargent and was told he would look into it and call me back. B.S!!!!!!!!. its been two weeks late and not one of them has called me back!!! grrrrrrrrr i hate the system!
TerriB 07-10-2006, 11:50 AM I used to use bookamillion.com and they were incredible he would receive them within a week, then I started using my mom/pop bookstore as well and they would ship them priority he would have them within a week. Then the prison changed all the rules ...
PLEASE call the mailroom at the prison your sending to, in order to make sure they are still accepting from certain vendors.
