Though prison rape does exist, the media, TV and movies have played on this unfairly. It does not happen as often as it seems if you have been watching shows like Oz and things like that. Though rape behind bars is a horrible experience and situation the Canadian prisons do not have a big problem as far as this is concerned. I can tell you from my own experiences behind the bars things have changed drastically in that department in Canadian prisons.
I suggest the best way to ease your fears and your boyfriend is to encourage him to talk to you openly about his experiences there and to not be worried about telling you the truth. The most horrible part of any prison experience is to be a victim of any kind of violent behaviour and when and if this happens, often prisons do not feel there is anyone they can talk too. If something like this or any act of violence occurs to anyones loved one please feel free to private message us or post about it but please leave out names in order to protect those we love. We will all do the best we can to find resources and other forms of help that you can pass along.
But to your question, I think it is very rare these days in Canadian prisons. So try not to worry and just keep supporting him and letting him know he has you as an outlet for anything he needs to discuss. Stay strong and try not to watch the prison movies :)

My man is doing time in Edmonton Max as well and the fact of the matter is no matter if it's max, med, or even a remand center it could happen and the one thing that may help you cope a bit better is Edmonton Max is a maximum security facility so the security and inmate to gaurd ratio is higher which means there is a lot less chances for things of that nature to happen...don't let your self be bothered by things like that as long as your man does his own time i'm sure he'll be fine thats key Do your own time in a jail like that a lot of those men are lifers and aren't scared so if you do your time and they do theres life should be fine!

In the many years I worked in the Canadian correctional setting, rape was not a major problem although it would naturally occur more often, if at all, in a maximum security setting where offenders did not have access to escorted or unescorted passes or, alternately, the Private Family Visit Program. In the latter case, inmates were permitted to have family members/wives etc. visit them in a trailer located on the institutional grounds. The visit would normally last 2 to 3 days and the family member would remain in the trailer with the inmate for the duration of that visit. Interestingly enough, by order of the Federal Court of Canada in 1986, all programs made available to heterosexual inmates were also required to be offerred to homesexual offenders and gay/lesbian inmates were then
permitted access to the Private Family Visit Program as well. This was the type of program which greatly reduced the need for forced sex within the correctional setting. I always noted, too, that rape in medium or minimum security institutions was not tolerated by the inmate population.

To show you just how rediculous the system often was, I was required to provide condoms to inmates who requested them but, if I then found that same inmate involved in sexual activity with other inmates, I was required to report them and they would be disciplined. Yeah right!!! Like I'm going to be that stupid. Give the guy a condom in an all male institution and then act surprised when he used it to have sex. Then to make it even more rediculous, that same inmate on another occasion was permitted to have access to the Private Family Visit program where he could scr*w his brains out for the weekend with his male lover and then, once back in the institution, he was to forget that he was gay. Brilliant.

Anyway, I digress. I really don't think that rape is a major problem in Canadian institutions with possibly the exception of maximum security settings but even there occurrences are few and far between.
