View Full Version : What is a BOX prison? Minerva 05-06-2006, 11:52 AM What is a "box" prison? Wife C 05-07-2006, 07:16 PM It's usually a prison that the DOC uses for inmates when they get tickets depending apon the seriousness of the ticket. For example 5 Points is a box facility. I think that Great Meadow is also but they also have regular inmates there. outlawsdeb 05-07-2006, 07:33 PM And then you have Upstae that is the ultimate BOX.....<gag> starzzmom 05-10-2006, 09:31 PM and don't forget Southport. All box except for a hundred or so Cadres. THey are even in a "box" in the visit room. Diamondz 05-15-2006, 03:32 PM Security Housing Units SHU's come in many shapes and sizes Upstate is 23 out of 24 hr day. double bunk, neverout of cell visits are Saturday/ Sunday daytime hours Southport is the same with Saturday/sunday visit daytime hours. Only 1 visit a week. Week ends on Saturday So if you isit on Sunday you cannot go up the following Sat. Then there are SHU 200's usually located on the property of medium facilities. 23 out of 24 in cell. Most have visits on Saturday evenings only Some prisons have there own box. and you can either be SHU or keeplock. jessi_c 05-30-2006, 02:16 PM Southports horrible my hubbys in southport for the next year and three months. it really sucks that you got to visit through a cage you cant even show your man any love because of the fence between you and its not at all necessary thay just do it to be nasty with the friends and loved ones of these men so that you get sick of it and not want to visit anymore. Momma Ann 05-30-2006, 02:54 PM at Great Meadow--there is an SHU at Collins which is otherwise a medium facility. starzzmom 05-30-2006, 09:56 PM jessi, I agree they do alot to discourage us from visiting, (not that ANYTHING would keep me from my hubby) but they DID have a reason for doing the whole cage thing. A long while ago, there were problems, inmate to inmate, and a visitor was hurt by another inmate, I beleive he threw a chair at her (hence the chairs being chained down) so they did it for the safety of the visitors. Well so they say. I think they could have done something else like put each inmate/visitor in thier own "cage". I do so hate these visits, and I too have a looong time to go visiting there. LSB 06-20-2006, 09:46 AM read here.... http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=S01498&sh=t starzzmom 06-21-2006, 08:46 PM ok well that is a crock. sorry. I didn't know a dirty urine was considered highly dangerous. And they have given more then 90 days, to plenty of people I know and they do not review every 90 days. HUH! Minerva 08-31-2007, 06:11 PM Thanks for input. Found out what "box" meant right after I posted. I'd thought of it as place where they kept you until you were placed from reception. Guess it applies here in a way. SHU and keeplock are described in NYDocs. See directives and other things there, such as Tier I, II, and III. In the box is inhumane deprivation as far as I am concerned. ariesandtaurus 03-17-2008, 05:56 PM Upstate box is in Malone, NY ... My husband was there for 11 months then again... the 2nd time being in the wrong place at the wrong time with other inmates getting into a fight with a c/o in the hall and he happen to be there... he wrote me 25 pages and swore up and down he wasnt involved and I did believe him on this because he just had gotten out of the box... IT was a long ride... I stayed once a month in a hotel over sat to sunday right up the block from that ugly place. He drew a pic of the cell it was small and had to share with someone else most of the t ime... Nikki&J0E 4eva 04-04-2008, 09:27 AM omg how horrible =[ !!!! lovepurple 06-21-2008, 07:39 AM Some people here have said how their loved ones ended up in the box, but I'm curious to hear about others! My friend was in Southport years ago before I knew him for drugs, and was scared recently while on keeplock about going when a CO lied about him with something to do with lighting a cig in keeplock when he doesn't smoke! He was stunned when another CO stood up for him to say he didn't smoke. He claims that's the 1st time he had ever seen a ticket being thrown away! He described the box as being in Hell. In my opinion, punishment like that should be used for violence only! That's when someone should be seperated, and I said seperated, not isolated, just so they can't hurt anyone else! I can't believe the long box sentences! Where is prison reform? Yea, I know, doesn't exist! I think if we share experiences it will inform the rest of us what their loved ones are going thru at the prison they are in. Lovepurple Mesmerized 06-24-2008, 10:57 AM My man just got transferred out of Southport. Thank GOD!!!! He hated it there. He got sent there wrongfully accused. He warned me about the mail and said that they put feces in letters and mail them to people. I couldn't put my whole address on the envelope for fear that I might get a stinky letter! I don't see how when the mail goes out, they couldn't smell anything suspicious. I also heard that they throw feces on eachother. I'm one of those people who walk around with hand sanitizer so I know I wasn't gonna step foot in Southport! Scrpachick 11-04-2008, 06:54 PM Hello Ladies, Hope someone can help me. My husband was just put on keeplock for a dirty urine after 45 days of being locked up on a 3 1/2. Problem is he was on the visit with me when they said they smelled the weed. So I know everybody is thinking ......dirty urine after 45 days...he's smoking. Well I looked it up on the net and for a chronic smoker (3-4 blunts a day)it can take 45-90 days. During his hearing (the lady is the head of Inmate Accounts!) she stated that if he fought it she would make sure he went for 120 days instead of the 90 in a Box....So I sent out the stuff from the net. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen, or can give me some advise. He and I both know, they will hit him for the 120 but he will appeal it to albany.... Just want to get some info on what else we can do. He has a non violent, so he only had to do the 2 1/2 but now it looks like he will do the whole 3 1/2, without getting this overturned. Thanks in advance for any help! |
