View Full Version : Tutwiler in Alabama (visitation and rules)
MsHartline 04-30-2006, 10:27 AM I visited my daughter for the second time on 4/15/06. She had a parole hearing on 4/11/06 (denied) in Montgomery, AL, and since visitation was the following Saturday, I hung around for that. A friend took a photo of the visitation rules and I typed them up. Where should I post those rules? (and possibly my experience with the visitations there).
Best wishes to all. My daughter will be released August 2007. I wonder if DOC can imagine how much the inmates' family is also punished and suffers. I wonder if even the inmate can imagine just what their family endures emotionally and financially prior to, during, and after incarceration.

MsHartline 05-06-2006, 07:43 AM I posted the rules. I thought they might be helpful. Perhaps I didn't look in the right place, but I never did find details when searching the site prior to my first visit last November. I am very grateful for PTalk. It's where I did my research for the (failed) parole hearing. I have not interacted on the website, just reading, reading, and more reading, but I'd be happy to discuss Tutwiler with anyone who would like more information. Sheila

MsHartline 05-06-2006, 07:50 AM Well, this copy turned out the same. When posted, the formatting changes a bit. Hope it still makes sense. Sheila
IzzyWizzy 07-30-2007, 09:49 PM Can you tell me if you have to be on an approved list to send money orders to a prisoners account?
elanher 07-31-2007, 12:27 AM Yes, you have to be on their list or you have to put someones name on the money order thats on the inmates list.
dalynd58 08-21-2007, 12:36 PM I am so happy that I have found this site. My grandaughter is waiting to be transferred to Tutweiler, she is in Talladega now.
Could some tell me if anyone can take items that she may need. Such as underware and etc. when she arrives. I called and they said that these items were not on the commissary list of things to purchase.
Thanks so much

dalynd58 08-21-2007, 12:40 PM Was really glad to read the visitation rules. Guess I am apprehensive about all of it
dalynd58 08-21-2007, 12:43 PM Oh Yes, is there any way to get on the list if the inmate doesn't know SS#'s and things?
auntm 08-21-2007, 06:59 PM we would like to be able to visit our niece at tutwiler. Will our 14 year old be able to visit with us? what types of items can inmates have? do inmates have thier own secure place to store items that they have? are visitors permitted to smoke?
Blueyez94 08-23-2007, 12:05 PM Inmates have there own lockers. As far as smoking, some facilities allow it and some don't. About the visit for the 14yrs old, probably will have to be a special visit...they can get special visits (1) every 6 months
MsHartline 08-27-2007, 10:10 AM auntm: Children under the age of 18 have to have a birth certificate.
dalynd58: Regarding This is what has happened with me:
Inmates cannot receive anything other than stamps and money orders. They have to purchase anything they need through the "store". (They can buy a radio but have to put in a request for approval and wait until it is approved). At Christmas, you can send them a "white box" (bras, socks, panties, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) There will be a list telling you just how many or how much of each item you can send, how large the box can be (all has to fit in one box). About mid-year - or July or so, they can have another "white box" - same process. You receive a list/instructions and go by that. If an item does not "pass inspection" it is donated to charity. (I sent items on several occasions that were donated.)
Best Wishes - Sheila
Also, you get to order a Christmas box (all food items) through a company the prison has contracted. You receive an order form. I always ordered online. You can select up to $100 worth of items. The inmates begin receiving these as early as Dec. 17th or so.
My daughter was released yesterday - I picked her up about 10am. I don't have to worry about this (OR THE PHONE!!!) anymore.
Blueyez94 08-27-2007, 10:49 AM MsHartline....I am glad to hear about your daughter....best of luck to her and please let us know how she is doing...I know you are glad she is home...
