ICANDOTHIS 07-16-2003, 08:12 PM Hello all...I am new to PTO..happened to be surfing the internet and ran across this site, which I find so very helpful and interesting..everyone seems so close, like a family..My boyfriend just began serving his sentence one month ago today..He is in the camp in Marion, Il..I was wondering if anyone has any information about this place..such as places to stay when u visit..and any thing else that may be helpful.
Thanks
ICANDOTHIS: There is a prisoner support group in Marion Ill, that can get you a discount on a motel, the phone number is 1-618-997-1227 I just returned from a 4 day stay... the prison, and the camp are hidden in the Wildlife Refuge, if you need directions.. not too many visitors, not too many inmates there. ICANDOTHIS: I have been to Marion Ill, several times to the USP, so i know the town very well, been going almost 3 years now... if you need more info..TAZI
Waiting 07-22-2003, 04:59 PM Hi,
I just registered half an hour ago and my heart goes out to you. My husband has been in Marion since November.
The only thing I have to say is, don't get there between 9:45 and 11 am. They do the count then and you will wait at the gate until it is over.
Good luck,
Waiting

tessa 07-23-2003, 01:07 AM Hello. Waiting,
What is the camp like? Any more general info on it they you could share? we are hoping for a camp for our son but had said he didn't want to go to Marion ( not sure why) He has never been incarcerated before and I thinkhe has just heard rumors that it was rough and tough, I don't know.
How are the visits?
Good Luck to you all. Tessa
Waiting 07-24-2003, 05:48 PM Yes, my husband is at the Camp. It is attached to the maximum security prison. That might be why the rumors about it being rough and tough.
A prison camp has no fences or bars, the men stay in dormitory style rooms. It is supposed to be much better than the higher security places. Their lives still belong to the Federal Prison Bureau. If they cause any kind of trouble they are immediately transferred out to a medium security prison. So, for the most part, they are pretty nice to each other.
As far as my staying anywhere when I visit, I live close enough to drive there and back in one day. I've had others who visited my husband stay in Marion. It's a pretty good size town and you should be able to find lots of motels.
You can only visit on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. It's in a big metal building, pretty primative, no air conditioning but there is heat in the winter. It's also very crowded. There are vending machines that take dollar bills, bring a lot with you. You can't bring anything and I mean anything in with you. No food or pictures. Get a clear plastic purse and put your keys and money in it. If you don't they will tell you about it.
I hope this helps. It's so good to see your loved one you hardly notice the shabby surroundings.

Laustintexas 09-20-2006, 04:34 PM The USP at Marion is now empty. They are moving new inmates there soon, but there aren't even guards at the front gate right now. The main problem there is fighting boredom. PM me if you want some details of the camp itself. I vacationed there for a while and am now a proud member of the employed world.
MissDeville 09-30-2006, 07:29 AM My brother came home from there on Monday. You can PM me as well.
Woodys_Wife 02-14-2009, 12:33 AM Hello. My husband has to ss on 02/26/09 to the satellite camp at USP Marion. He has never been in trouble before and neither of us know what to expect or how to prepare for what lies ahead. It will be a little over a 5 hour drive one way for our kids and me to visit when we can. Any info would be helpful...seriously, ANY info at all. Thanks!:)
