View Full Version : Wallkill information anyone?
LLLLilith 04-23-2006, 07:40 PM If anyone has any information about packages to Wallkill, PLEASE POST! I'm getting conflicting info from my friend and from the websites - HELP!
I have read the info on here about Wallkill, but it does not address packages except to refer to frozen foods.
Thanks in advance for any help!L:thumbsup:
PrincessTNY 04-23-2006, 08:31 PM I don't know anything other than what's already posted, but my man is getting transferred there within the next 2 months so let me know what you find out! Good luck...
laflor 04-24-2006, 05:30 PM My honey was in Wallkill for a few months,it's as stated in the thread they are very laid back. When it comes to packages they accept anything except the frozen foods the reason they have no fridge. The inmates are provided with buckets of ice which maintains their food cold to a certain temperature but everything else is okay, they have no stoves just hot plates and have to cook on those aluminum trays, and oh yes from when he was there which was last year he told me they had no microwaves so food wise it's very difficult to guess perhaps wait for him to tell you what he needs. When he was at Wallkill I would bring him the basic and the typical allowable at any other facility I guess they can make ends meet but I understand your concerns. Anyway I hope that this little bit of information helps you in your decision.
LLLLilith 04-25-2006, 06:17 PM Thank you thank you thank you for the response - so very much.
Seemed like I was out of where to turn to - so I appreciate you taking the moment to respond more than I can say.
I'm trying to find out about poundage - he's saying that he can get up to 30 (or was it 35) pounds per month - but at Attica it is 30 or 35 pounds from HOME twice a YEAR - big diff - and as much food as could be sent in from vendors.
It's the pounds thing - who do I call at the prison to ask, so as to be sure I have it right? Who?
Anyone know?
LLLLilith 04-25-2006, 06:18 PM Almost forgot - how about sending books? Attica was send as much as you please - but I don't know about this prison.
Manzanita 04-26-2006, 06:50 PM Wallkill is WAY less strict than Attica.....you can send books, if you do not find any information here, how about calling Wallkill. As far as I know, the weight allowed for a package is 35lbs. ;)
laflor 04-26-2006, 07:47 PM Wallkill is a medium and Attica is a Max, from my understanding I don't know maybe someone else can correct me on this if I'm wrong but I beleive that Max's you're only allowed 2x a year a package from home. And Medium's have different rules once a month and yes 30 to 35 pounds depending on the facility but mediums are 1 amonth.
Manzanita 04-26-2006, 10:11 PM it is 2 packages from home per month equal to 35 lbs. for a MAX...
I would call Wallkill to check it out ;)
maidenheart 04-27-2006, 05:41 AM Yes, Wallkill is one of the nicer places I have seen so far. When I have brought in packages they could weigh up to 35 lbs and can be brought in each month. They have a limit on the amount of books they are allowed, I will ask him but I believe he told me once before that he can only have 6 books in his room at a time. laflor's post is pretty accurate about the kind of food allowed. I always have him tell me what he needs because only he really knows what is allowed and what he really needs. Btw, at holidays the guys get together and make their meals and so each one brings something to add to it and that way they get a variety of food and the companionship they know they are needing more because of it being a holiday. If I can answer anything thing else just ask... and welcome to Wallkill.
PrincessTNY 04-27-2006, 03:00 PM What about visits, Maidenheart? Is it necessary to get there very early? What do I need to know? My man is in eastern Annex now and they're VERY laid back there.
maidenheart 04-27-2006, 05:21 PM PrincessTNY, the visits are much like they are at Eastern Annex, that is where we were before coming here. It is a relaxed atmosphere just like Easytern. Visiting starts at 7:30 am and ends at 2:15pm. There usually isn't a long wait to get in and there are two visiting rooms to accomodate quite a large amount of people. I try to get there early because I want to spend as much time with him as I can however, it is almost a 3 hour drive for me and sometimes I may plan on 7:30 but I can't make it until 8:30, so when I get there depends on how much traffic there was on my way. Two things are missing at Wallkill, the wonderful barbeques, I really miss the picnics we spent each weekend, and we are limited to 4 visits a month, so only one saturday or sunday a week instead of being able to vist both days each weekend.
PrincessTNY 04-27-2006, 07:10 PM Doesn't sound that bad...he should be there by sometime in June - July the latest. I'm happy because it's closer to the City and also because they have programs there that will keep him busy to make time go by faster. You had an overall good experience there though? Anything I should know about to look out for? Be on guard for? I want to be prepared for anything and everything...Thanx so much!
LLLLilith 05-09-2006, 08:51 PM Thank you Laflor and Princess and Maidenheart and JenG for your help! It made me feel so much less alone in this. :hifive:
I have info to share now - did some experimenting and so have info but need to know if anyone knows where one can buy provolone cheese that does not say "Must be refrigerated" - ANYWHERE!:banghead:
Yes, Attica is a Max - and Wallkill is a medium.
In Attica food boxes were only two per year from home but up to two per month from vendors.
Now Wallkill is about poundage - I can send up to two food boxes per month that have a combined total weight of 30 pounds.
Nothing can say "keep refrigerated" but can say "Refrigerate upon opening"/"after opening". Which is why I'm having trouble with the provolone issue.
So far I've sent two boxes. One food box from CVS of candy and nuts which was six pounds of food ---- what is different is that they do not take into account the weight of the packaging (which they sure did at Attica). They really do add up the ounces of each item. :p
Then I sent from here at home at total of 23 pounds, and it went through just fine.
Only issue was that NO CANNED ITEM CAN BE ABOVE 16 OUNCES. That meant a couple things I had purchased previously could not go. :slap:
Book packages or clothing or soaps, et cetera are no limit per month or by pounds, but there are rules, like the one about no alcohol in a product - which I found out too late in the form of a deodorant!
I have also sent books one at a time from Amazon vendors, and both were accepted. :D
I sent another box via CVS of bar soaps, hand lotion, toothpaste, and deodorant ---- the toothpaste was denied (simply not an allowed item for the prison) as was the deodorant due to having alcohol in it.
Sending such was a waste of money, really, as the shipping is prohibitive unless sending alot of stuff, AND he could get the items in the commisary cheaper.
However, I can't find the provolone anywhere that doesn't have the "Keep refrigerated" ---- anyone have any ideas on this?
Thank you in advance!
L
Manzanita 05-12-2006, 06:14 AM I would not send dairy products by mail, when I bring stuff like cheese, I go in person and bring it, and there is sealed Provolone, I buy it too.
There is a Package Guidelines listed in what you need to know forum here.

rose322 06-28-2007, 03:53 PM My ex spent some time at Walkill (He was paroled in 12/07), and I have to say his/my experience with the facility was always pleasant. Regarding packages, inmates are able to receive two packages totalling 35 lbs. monthly. There are some exceptions at Christmas and Thanksgiving (I think) where they're able to receive 5 more lbs. The visits there are nice, especially if you have children. They have a great play room stocked with lots of toys, books, games, crayons and movies to keep bored children occupied. The guards are friendly, the food is typical, but better than other facilities I've been (Downstate, Fishkill) and dropping off packages has never been easier. You don't have to stand in a long line & go through each item with a co. You just drop the package off before your visit and if anything is unacceptable they return it to you at the end of the visit. Of the three state prisons my ex was at he and I both liked Wallkill most. They're laid back and cater to children, which is more than I can say for Fishkill. If you have an questions about Wallkill, I'd be more than happy to help!!
