View Full Version : I Have An Important Question regarding collect calls, Please Help
jesika 04-15-2006, 12:42 PM Im an 18 yr old living in quebec. i am new to the prison system. when my guy calls (supposedly from jail) the message says: you have a long distance call from: (guy`s name) it doesnt mention that he's calling from jail....is this a possibility?
PattiD1157 04-15-2006, 12:58 PM Hello and welcome to PTO. I wish I had an answer for you, but with the phones here and all the facilities it has always had the facility name on the recording or something to the effect that the call was from an inmate.
ringoswife 04-15-2006, 02:41 PM Welcme to PTO!! I never really noticed but I'll listen to the whole thing when ringo calls tonight and post back. I usually just press 1 to accept right away.
Mongo's Mama 04-15-2006, 02:43 PM Every place that my man has been in (county, state and fed) all say that the call is from a correctional facility. Every place is different though, so I couldn't say for certainty.
You said 'supposedly' like you don't believe that he is anyway. Why would someone say they were if they weren't?
aaronsgirl 04-16-2006, 01:29 PM whenever my man has called its always been the same "you have a collect call from...." and it never mentions anything about a correctional facility. its the same when you place or accept a collect call thats not from prison or jail also, hope that answers your question.
ringoswife 04-16-2006, 06:24 PM When my man called (from a federal prison) last night it didn't say it was from a correctional center - BUT when a friend called this morning from a provincial jail it said it was from a correctional center and as such subject to monitoring and/or recording. He called collect - she didn't. I don't know whether that makes a difference or not. I believe in federal they have a list of approved phone numbers - in provincial they can call any number.
Nicole32 04-17-2006, 12:33 PM In federal every call is collect whether or not you live next door or hundreds of miles away (at least in BC). They do not tell you that it is a call from an institution, and the inmates list has to be approved to be dialed. As for provinicial (at least for the men's insitutions) the list also has to be approved but they can call collect or they can put money on their card to pay for the calls themselves. They are able to phone land lines collect as well as pay for it themselves or they can pay for it themselves and call cell phones. The recording, (Provinical) whether they pay for the call or they call you collect, always tells you that it is a call from a correctional institution (not the name) and that it may be monitored etc. It then allows you to not take the call, accept the call or to be removed from the inmates list and to not permit the calls in the future. In Federal you are not allowed to call cell phones, at least not the institutions that my husband has been in.
ringoswife 04-17-2006, 12:43 PM In Alouette (women's provincial) we had phone cards that we could use to call collect or put funds on to call direct. We didn't have to have any number approved and could call cell phones direct but not collect. A local direct dialed call cost $.90 for approx 1/2 hour so it was worth it to put money on your card. Calls to government agencies, shelters, recovery houses, lawyers (I can't remember what else) were free. It took a month to get my card to work - someone input some numbers wrong in the system and it took that long to get someone to track it down. It is an offence to use anyone else's card.
It also took weeks to get my daughter's phone number put on ringo's list as he wanted to add it later. Luckily it was added just before I went in as that was his quick link to what was happening with me until I was placed and we could write.
Nicole32 04-17-2006, 12:53 PM Yes, that it the same as the men's provincial institutions, with the card. It is too bad they took so long to get your card going and to add names to ringo's. Luckily we have never had a problem, knock on wood, and he is able to call me usually the day or day after he arrives. Hate to say it but it is probably because they look at the list from his last "visit" (federal or provincial) and if they have approved you before without incident then you don't have go through the approval process again. Good luck to you and your husband, I hope that you don't have to wait for him to long.
Yoosgirl 04-17-2006, 01:18 PM I have a question for jesika. Why do you say supposedly from jail, do you question weather he is actually in jail? All of my man's calls are collect and it says ' you have a collect call from-and he says his name-and then you press 1 to accept the call.
witchlinblue 04-23-2006, 03:08 AM In the states it always says the facility but in Canada it doesnt always say that, especially the jails.
Melissastar 04-25-2006, 04:29 PM I have received collect calls from Windsor, and 2 federal prisons and they have always just been regular collect calls. They never mentioned what institute or city.
coaster 05-04-2006, 02:51 PM when my guy got moved to federal he can only call collect....and it tells me there is a collect call from a federal correctional institute. I will be billed for this call do you wish to accept.
Hope that helps

robbreid 04-04-2007, 05:41 PM Call your telephone provider and ask where your collect calls, being billed to your phone originate from.
jessicarabbitt 04-05-2007, 06:33 AM I know from experiance that you are able to make 3way calls in some jails. do inmates if caught get in trouble for this?
robbreid 04-05-2007, 01:51 PM Guys make 3 way calls all the time. Even if you don't know anyone, for afew cigarettes or whatever, there is always someone who'll make the call for you.
In Canadian prison's, a guy will sit down, make the call. Then pretend his call is done, the next guy sits down and picks up the phone that is already connected.
They do record all calls, and listen to most if not all. Not word for word, but I've never known anyone to actually get in any trouble for it.
