Reports of hunger strike at Calipatria State Prison

NewsChannel 3
Tonight, NewsChannel 3 is still receiving reports of a hunger strike at Calipatria State Prison. The hunger strike is reportedly protesting the prison lockdown that's been in effect since last month when an inmate attacked a guard.
Calipatria State Prison, located south of the Salton Sea, holds about 4,000 inmates, with the majority serving life sentences.
Last month, an inmate tried to kill a guard the prison has been on lockdown since then.
NewsChannel 3 has received reports that there are hundreds of prisoners on a hunger strike in protest of the lockdown. The wife of one prisoner, who wishes to remain anonymous, read to us excerpts from a letter she recently received from her incarcerated husband.
“’We're holding strong. It's been at least 3 full days with no food. Almost 500 people. A few have drifted off and taken food, that's their choice. But there are hundreds of us that are determined to see this through.’”
The letter also claims inmates are being forced to live in unsanitary conditions and that those on a hunger strike are starting to feel weak and sick.
“’The CO's act like it doesn't matter. ‘go ahead and starve yourselves, we don't give a s---.’ Somebody is going to give a s---. It will take suffering and sacrifice on our part to bring about changes at this prison, it won't happen overnight.’”
We asked prison officials about the hunger strike and got a very different story.
“There is no hunger strike going on at this time.”

Yeah this sounds good. Most of these inmates have canteen that they have been stocking up on for the last month. The "C/O's" are not there depriving food to these "Grown Men". We do not need to force feed these clients. The strike is an "Inmate Issue". These CLients are getting their showers and offered to pick up their trash and offered food. They need to go about it another way.. Feeling sick and weak are 2 symptoms of not eating the proper nutrition. The State of California provides Inmates with the proper diet consisting of 3000- 3500 Calories per day. That is the Daily recommended allowance. No I am not Sympathetic to those who try to push the envelope and get everything that they want. Just remember there is 3 sides to every story. The inmate(What he claims is happening), the state(policy and procedure) and actually what is really happening. Some times you must think outside of the box..

"There are 100s of us?!" WHAT A LOAD OF BULLSHITTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! Speaking at least for 1 yard here, that is utterly and totally false,a lie, fabrication, utter nonsense!!!! They act like food is being withheld, and the mean ol; guards are teasing them by eating pheasant under glass on the tier in front of them. Iv'e yet to see more than 1 I/m brought over to the clinic for medical eval. due to "starving". ( we had ONE that was seen but he happily went back to chowing down eventually) And like the pupster said they have canteen in their cells which they recieved PRIOR TO THE OFFICER BEING VISCIOUSLY SLASHED AND GOING BACK ON LOCKDOWN!!! And of course inmates never lie.
