I was just wondering if anyone goes to FCI McKean in Pennsylvania? My husband is there and I was just wondering how the visitations there go? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The visits are contact visits. The rules tend to change very often like from visit to visit. They do random drug testing on the visiters buy swabbing your hands, coats and pockets. No underwires! If there's anything else you'd like to know just ask and i'll try to answer!

Do you usually get to stay for the whole visitation hours? Is the process to get to the visiting room usually a long wait? Are the guards really strict there like about what you wear and things like that?

They let you stay the whole visit most of the time. The only time I've seen them cut the visit is if you come with more than a group of three people. They really don't say anything about clothes I've been told not to wear shirts cut too low but i'm also very busty and i think it was more of a joke:p . The longest it has taken me to get to the visiting room is 1 hour but he guy was new and it was crowded.

i just got back from taking my husband for self-surrender and they were really nice to me (unlike county where they treated me like i was the inmate). the man at teh desk said to call the next day and he would answer any questions i had. my husband is in the camp, but you can call like i did and ask what you need to if yours is not. as for visitation, he specifically said to make sure that shorts were no higher than 3 inches above the knee and that shirts need to have sleeves. he didn't mention anything about an underwire in bras, but i've read that in many places. i also questioned him about the ion scanners i've read so much about, but he said with camp it's not like that and that they don't scan your hands, just shoulders, etc (covered parts). i told him i was concerned due to my antidepressants (reading people coming up positive). he also said that most money has drug residue on it, after i told him that i had read where you needed to wash your hands after touching it and before being scanned. speaking of money, you can take up to $40 in, nothing larger than 5's. you cannot take in your purse, just keys. anything you take must be in clear pouches. if you take in wipes for a baby, they have to be in a baggy as well. you can call 814-362-8900 and ask if you want to know anything else. hope this helps.

Maybe take a look at buying a bus ticket or a plane ticket. If you get them in advance a week sometimes 2 its alot cheaper.

Where exactly would I lodge if I was going to vist an inmate in McKean? It looks like it is in the middle of nowhere.

There's a lot of hotels on the way up there. You can look them up on Mapquest.

I travel to Mckean monthly to visit my guy and when I stay I ususally stay at the Best Western in Bradford about 10 minutes from the prison. Its a bit costly ( 89 dollars) but it does include breakfast and I say you get what you pay for. I hear there are motels nearby but I havent stayed at any of them. I would prefer a nice cozy room, cable tv, heat, internet service and a hot breakfast! prior to my visit.

My fiancee will be going to Mckean anyday now and your information was very helpful. I am in Virginia so I would have to stay for weekend. I see that they have visits on Saturdays and Sundays. Are you able to visit both days or just one and how is the weather in the winter?

Normally they get a Lot of snow in Pa, but lately the weather has been quite calm for driving. you might want to check the Bradford, Pa weather before you make that trip. Also, you can visit on both Sat & Sun there is no limit to the visits. UPDATE: I recently went to Mckean this Sat and they recently installed a new metal detector in which it appears to be very sensative. My daughter was unable to pass because of metal on her jeans. My mom had to go to Wal-mart to buy new jeans so BEFORE you go dont wear anything that is metal attatched to your clothing also if you have a sports bra wear it!!! refrain from wearing any bra, underwire or with clasp hooks to hook the bra in the back apparently these metals make the detector go off and you will NOT be allowed in. Since this is new equipment they will be much stricter than before when it comes to letting people in. Also there is a conveyor belt, which wasnt used but its set up like passing through airport security. So to be safe wear jogging suits, non metal clothing and BRING AN EXTRA CHANGE OF CLOTHES JUST IN CASE YOU DONT GET IN THE FIRST TIME, WITH WHAT YOU ARE WEARING!!!!!!

how long are you allowed to visit for???

I make the trip to visit at least twice a month. Every time I have went so far I was allowed to stay from 8:30am until 3:00pm. As a matter of fact I will be going this weekend to see my baby!!!!:D :D
