Our mission:
The KernCounty Sheriff's Department is committed to work in partnership with our community to enhance the safety, security, and quality of life for the residents and visitors of KernCounty through professional public safety services.




The Kern County Sheriff's Department, Detentions Bureau has an average daily inmate population of approximately 2,500 inmates. We receive approximately 40,000 new arrests a year. The Detention Bureau's primary Inmate Reception Center is the Central Receiving Facility. In addition the Bureau operates two smaller receiving centers in eastern Kern County, and the Lerdo Detention Complex just North of Bakersfield.

General Information
The Central Receiving Facility is the facility where inmates are received. Inmates are generally held in this facility pending their release or first Court appearance. If the inmate will be in custody past their first Court appearance, the inmate is generally transferred to one of the Facilities at the Lerdo Complex.

Q: What are the mail rules?
Mail Rules: Rules for mail coming into the facility are as follows:

All mail is inspected for contraband when it is received.
Money orders and cashier’s checks may be sent to an inmate through the mail and will be added to the inmate’s commissary account. Please include the inmate’s booking number on the money order or cashier’s check.
Personal checks are not acceptable and will be returned to the sender
No photographs, pictures or photocopies of photos will be accepted
Books and magazines will only be permitted if they are sent to the inmate directly from the publisher
The inmate is not allowed to receive any unused envelopes, stamps, or paper in the mail
Letters and envelopes must be free from any white out, lipstick marks, address labels, or stickers of any kind. No large cards, musical cards, cards with glitter or other items attached will be allowed.




Receiving Money: Cash, money orders and cashier’s checks sent via U.S. Mail or brought into the Central Receiving Facility for an inmate will be accepted in any amount and placed on the inmate’s commissary account.

Inmates may release their money and property to any out of custody person, if the person possesses a U.S. government or U.S. State government issued picture identification.
Money or personal property may be released completely or partially at any time of the day or night with the inmate’s approval. The shift supervisor may postpone a release if the release will interfere with court pulls, meal passes or sick call. Visiting Rules and Hours

Number of visits allowed per week:

Regular Inmates: two (2) thirty-minute (30-minute) visits, but only one per visitor per day.
Inmate Laborers: three (3) thirty-minute (30-minute) visits NOTHING is allowed in the visiting area (purse, stroller, phones, etc) except photo ID, (1) baby bottle, (1) baby diaper, keys. All other items should be left in your vehicle, there is no safe storage area available for prohibited items.

General Information
The Lerdo PreTrial facility is the largest facility in the Kern County Jail System. It holds inmates that are awaiting a Court hearing and inmates serving County Jail Commitments. The facility hold inmates that for whatever reason, are not compatible with the lower security setting of the Lerdo Minimum Facility


Visiting Rules and Hours
Rules:



Proper identification is required of all visitors to the facility. Acceptable identification:

Valid non-expired Driver’s license with photo from any State
Identification with photo from any State
Any other County or State identification with a photo
Any U.S. Government-issued photo identification
Photo passport Note: Check cashing cards will not be accepted as identification.(No exceptions). Minors do not need to have an I.D.; however, a guardian must accompany them.





The visiting week will begin on Monday and end on Sunday.





Inmates are allowed two (2) thirty-minute (30-minute) visits each week.





Only two (2) adults and two (2) children or one (1) adult and three (3) children will be allowed to visit at a time.

Lerdo Minimum Security Facility

General Information
The Lerdo Minimum Security Facility is located in the Lerdo Complex and houses approximately 900 male inmates and 100 female inmates. The facility is comprised of multiple “barracks” of between 30 and 40 inmates. The Lerdo Minimum Security Facility is the oldest facility at the Lerdo Detention Complex. The facility dates back to the 1940’s when it was classified as an industrial road camp under the jurisdiction of the County Roads Department. In 1970 the minimum facility was turned over to the supervision of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.

Money will be received at any time of the day or night except Friday and Saturday nights from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Money will not be accepted during visiting hours but may be left after visiting is over.

General Information
The Lerdo Max-Med facility is part of the Lerdo Complex. It holds overflow inmates from the Pre-Trial Facility. The facility has a capacity of 364 inmates, but is currently not in full operation.

General Information
The Mojave Jail operates as a receiving facility for inmates arrested in the Mojave area and as a Court Holding Facility in support of the Mojave Branch of the Superior Court. Because of the facilities size (14 beds) and intended operation, the facility does not offer the range of inmate services available at other facilities.

Visiting Rules and Hours
The Facility has visiting hours for inmates that have been booked and processed. These visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday between 6 and 7 pm. A thirty minute visit is allowed.

The Ridgecrest Jail operates as a receiving facility for inmates arrested in the Ridgecrest area and as a Court Holding Facility in support of the Ridgecrest Branch of the Superior Court. Because of the facility's size (14 beds) and intended operation, the facility does not offer the range of inmate services available at other facilities.

Visiting Rules and Hours
The facility has inmate visiting available 7 days a week between 9 AM and 3 PM, except when the facility is operating as a Court Holding Unit. Visitors should call ahead to confirm.
