Someone told me prisoners can apply for grants as a "Minority." I'm guessing released prisoners do not make up a minority group. I fell for it tho, and looked at a few book stores and on line. Could find nothing.
Anyone heard of anything.

Grants. like... start a restaurant, write a book etc.

The only time I have heard ex-cons being "monority" is that their employer can get a tax write off on their salary if they hire minorities...Minorities in this case are considers homeless, ex drug addicts, released prisoners....I am not sure if they hav ethis law anyplace else but NY, but i never heard of anything like you are talking about. If you get info, please let me know

ok here is what I do know.....the rumor in all prisons is that ssi will pay $931.00 to inmates upon their release....Is that true? Well I am not completely sure but my guess is no. I was released from prison two years ago and now recieve SSI but not because I am a minority, but because I am disabled. I doubt Social Security pays you for being a "minority". You can, how ever, recieve help from many state funded agencies, such as Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services if they find you are diabled. The rules on this or less strict that Social Security as "addiction" is considered a disability. They will pay for your education, help you fix your car, or help you open a small business for yourself. I am currently in the program. As for employers getting a tax write-off for hiring felons, that is true, they get $2,500. for each felon they hire. It is a federal incentive program to help felons return to the work-force. There are alot of programs out there for ex-cons. You just have to really look for them and be very patient about getting accepted into them. It all takes alot of time, alot a patience, but is well worth the effort. I am a candidate to recieve 10k to start up my photography business but I have worked toward this grant for over a year.

SSI is typically paid to disabled individuals. For 2007 the SSI payment is approximately $623 for a single disable person and $934 for a disabled couple. I've heard that many individuals leaving prison after long terms are considered institutionalized and can receive SSI based on disability but it is not an automatic payment. It is a process.
