Visiting Rules

Visits are on a "first come, first served" basis.

All visitor's intending on going into the visiting rooms will be required to present a valid picture identification to the Sheriff's staff. Acceptable identification is as follows:
US Driver's License
US Identification Card
Valid Passport
Immigration identification
Military identification

No person under the age of 18 will be allowed to visit without a parent or guardian present. Parent or guardian must remain with minor during visit.
* Exceptions: emancipated minor, spouse of inmate - both require legally documented proof.

No person released from custody in San Mateo County in the previous 6 months will be allowed to visit.

Visitors are not allowed to bring anything into the visiting area: purses, keys, books, lighters, beepers, cellular phones, pocket knives, etc. are to be left outside the facility or stored in the lockers located in the public lobby.

Inmates are limited to two visits per seven-day period. The designated seven-day period for each inmate is different, and may change depending on the most recent visiting date.

Visiting sessions are for a 45 minute duration. Visiting rooms and lobby must be completely clear before the next session can begin.

A maximum of three (3) people (including children) may visit an inmate at one time.

Visitors who allow unauthorized persons into the visiting rooms with them are subject to cancellation of their visit and the possibility of any future visits revoked.

Visitors who bring small children may not leave their children unaccompanied at any time. Visitors with disruptive or uncontrollable children are subject to cancellation of their visit.

A volunteer from the Service League of San Mateo County may be available at certain hours of the day to attend to children in the Child Care Room near the main lobby. (A schedule is posted on the door.)

Inmates are not allowed to receive any personal items such as cigarettes, candy, books, etc. These types of items can be bought through Jail Commissary.


Any person who is disruptive, disrespectful, verbally abusive or argumentative with MCF staff or other visitors, will be asked to leave the facility and their visit canceled, including revocation of any future visits.


The Maguire Correctional Facility staff is not authorized to release inmate visiting information (i.e., names of inmate's visitors or date of inmate's last visit). The only exception is"the next available visiting date. This information may be provided if the MCF staff time permits.

Visiting may be canceled without advanced notice for security reasons and/or any other reason deemed necessary by the Watch Commander and/or Duty Sergeant.


Property

Inmate property or clothing will not be released unless a "Property Sign-off" form has been generated by the inmate and processed completely. Property release hours are as follows:

MONDAY:

THURSDAY:

Inmate clothing will not be released unless the inmate has been committed to a state facility.

CUSTODY DIVISION

CUSTODY PROGRAMS: Houses minimum security-risk male and minimum and high security-risk female inmates in a safe and secure environment and provides public and rehabilitative services to: promote community safety; support the successful transition of inmates back into the community; prevent overcrowding; and
reduce costs at the Maguire Correctional Facility; and provides cost savings to government agencies.

Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP)

Under authority of Penal Code §1203.016, and by order of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Electronic Monitoring Program was established as an alternative to incarceration in 1995. Utilizing advanced electronic equipment and personal surveillance, the Electronic Monitoring Program provides an alternative to incarceration for low risk offenders with stable housing environments. Carefully screened participants must either be employed, attend school or attend treatment programs, and pay an income-based fee for participation. In this County, by Court Order, the Courts must specifically recommend the participants for the Program.


Men's Minimum Security Transitional Facility (MSTF).

Used to ease the overcrowding of Maguire Correctional Facility that began when the Men’s Correctional Center was closed. The facility had a capacity rating of 30 until December 2003 when the Board of Corrections increased the capacity rating to 46. Since that time the average daily population has increased to the new maximum allowed.

Sheriff's Work Program.

Established in 1983 as an alternative to high cost incarceration and full-time confinement in a jail facility for those persons considered as low-risk, minimum security offenders.

Defendants serve time by participating in a work program and by performing public projects in lieu of confinement, while remaining productive members of the community. Participants pay a fee for participation, further reducing operational costs and costs to the County.

Provides security, care and custody for approximately 100 - 130 inmates and is committed to providing a myriad of rehabilitative services.
