My friend on DR has just "shut down" as he calls it and though I understand how and why this happens ,I am at a loss as to how to deal with it and somehow make him feel better and draw him back to the world of the living .So I am wondering if any of your friends go through this same thing and how and what you do when this happens. In his letters I can hear the sadness and hopelessness in his words . He has been there a very long time and his appeals process is almost exhausted. Any advice :confused:

Be the constant in his life. The one dependable thing that he has.

There is nothing that you can do to "cure" this shut down, but you can take hold of his hand and refuse to let go.

Just keep reaching out to him. Like Rach said just take his hand and hold on. Let him know that you will carry him and walk beside him.

The only thing you can do is be there for him and give him the best thing he could ask for and that is yourself and your love for him.

I realize I cannot "cure "anything about this whole rotten situation and it is sooo frustrating to hear someone you truly care for in so much despair and pain and know there is absolutely nothing you can do except be there . Thank you again and thanks for being there for all of us who are learning to deal with this insanity ....

Another good song is "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother". My friend is facing a DP trial and he is starting to get depressed and is talking about giving up. I just keep telling him how much I love him and to hold on. That I will never walk away from him not matter what happens. Can't help it...love the guy! Be the one thing in his life that he can depend on no matter what!
