View Full Version : Ulster question... Visits

I was wondering if there was a waiting period before an inmate can get a visit... like in Downstate I read that you have to wait 2 weekends before you can get a visit. Is there a period of time you have to wait for Ulster or can you go right away on the first weekend after they get there?

Also, does anyone have any info or has anyone been there recently? I read the other posts on this website but any tips anyone would like to share would be appreciated. :)

Thanks for any info. :)

DIN of the inmate, ask what days he is allowed to have visits, and get the name of the person you are talking to. There is a wait in most reception facilities-but do not know specifically about Ulster. calling is the best way to find out.

I don't think there is a waiting period to visit but visits are only on weekends and it goes by even/odd DIN.

Thanks everyone... He's not in Ulster yet... He's in Rikers in C-74 which is where they take them to get shipped upstate. So it should be any day now... We don't know if he's going to Ulster or Downstate but I was just curious as to the rules in both. I'll call the facility as soon as I know where he's going and when I get his DIN number.

My man just got to Ulster on Tuesday. As far as I know you don't have to wait. Scott said that he has visiting next weekend. It goes by the last digit in you DIN. This weekend is odd I think. Oh btw, Scott said that Ulster is so much better than Rikers!

Thanks Julianne, How long did your man have to wait from the time he was sentenced to the time he was sent to Ulster? I'm just curious because I'm dying to know when my man will be moved. He was sentenced on the 21st.

And thanks for the info because I was wondering what the visits were this weekend so at least when they move him I can have an idea on whether we can have a visit or not.

Good Luck with everything Julianne!

Scott was sentenced on the 17th and he was transferred on the 28th. Your man will probably be transferred really soon, it's different for everyone though. PM me and let me know how everything is going!

Thanks Julianne :) He thinks he's going really soon too. I think today will be our last visit. He's in ARDC now and he says he can't wait to get out of there because there are so many young kids that act really immature. He's used to being in GRVC which is really tough and strict. :) Anyways, I'll let you know when and where they ship him upstate.

Oh, one more question... can they have packages in Ulster (like their sneakers, shirts, boxers, socks, etc... that you would send them when they're in their jail) or do you wait until they get out of reception to send them their things?

No, you can't send or bring them packages. Only letters are allowed to be mailed to them. If he is a smoker you're allowed to bring him up to 2 cartons of cigarettes (they must have NY tax stamps on them), and you're allowed to put up to $50 in his commisary account each visit. Visiting hours are 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday, depending on his DIN#. Scott said that they give you clothes when you get there. You can also tell your man that he had better get used to them being strict again. At Ulster they get up at 6 am, they have to make their beds, and if they talk back they get sent right to the box!

Oh, and you're very welcome! :)
I've been finding so much information here at PTO (it's great), I'm glad that I can finally be of assistance to someone else!

P.S. I'm going to visit Scott on Sunday (yay, only 6 days away), so I'll let you know how that goes. I'm so excited about the 6 hour visit! I hate that you only get 1 hour at Rikers!

you can mail in as much as you want-put money order in an envelop addressed to him with his DIN on the money order. There is no limit on the $ you can send by mail-only on how much you can leave at a visit.

In reception, it is best to give them commissary $ as there are very limited package privileges. He will get a copy of whta is allowed when he gets there. Have him mail it to you. At Elmira Reception, there were certain things they could have-but each reception place differs-check his list.

Thank you all SOOOOOOOOO much. You have no idea how much you all are helping me right now! He was transferred to Ulster today! I cannot even believe it! I knew it was coming but now it hit me like a ton of bricks. I realize now how much I don't know! I thought I had read everything about Ulster but I still have questions! :)

I'm going to send him a money order tomorrow so he can at least get something. I am so worried! I don't know how I'm going to get through this. I've been a nervous wreck all day!

Oh, and I checked the inmate lookup (thank you Anneies ;)) and his DIN ends in an odd number :( (it figures) so I can't see him until next weekend (Easter weekend) but I would really really love to hear how your visit experience goes Julianne!

And wow! I didn't know they were strict there. lol. He's going to have to get used to being up at 6am! That's crazy. :) Has your man told you what they do while they are there? Do they have things to do in Ulster? I'm just wondering what my hubby is doing all day.

Oh, and how long did it take before your hubby got to call you when he was transferred to Ulster? I'm just wondering when I'll be able to hear from my husband (will it be today or tomorrow or not for a few days?)

And once again thank you guys soooo much because without you all I don't know what I would do! I think I would have a nervous breakdown if it wasn't for you all!

I GOT TO SPEAK TO HIM!!! Thank GOD!!! I am sooo relieved now.

Thank you so much Julianne, Anneies and DaneeBoy!

Julianne, I hope your visit is perfect this weekend! Enjoy the 6 HOURS with him!!! BIG improvement from Rikers, huh? :)

I hope mine is in Ulster long enough for me to get a visit with him!

I haven't really been able to talk to Scott (I have a cable phone and I'm not setting up my Prison Calls Online account until he gets transferred). I've only spoken to him on the phone once since he got to Ulster. I hate it because he called from Rikers at least twice a day! We've been mailing letters, but it takes forever (and they can only mail out 5 letters a week from Ulster). Anyway, I really don't know what they do there all day, but I'll let you know more when I visit (I can't wait!). It's too bad your husband has an odd DIN#! *Best Wishes* - Julianne

but I hope it works out for you!--Trust me as soon as hubby gets the hang of it, it won't seem as bad to him. At least that is what happened with my son at Elmira reception. Just tell him it will be better, less strict wherever he finally ends up. Reception is run very strictly because they are mixing a lot of folks who have not been evaluated yet. They have to be careful because you have everyone from Max A guys to guys going to Shock Camp all mixed together. So they are strict. Once it shakes out and he is assigned to a regular prison, it will be better-as better as being in prison can be.

The big thing about PTO is that you know what is going on and what to expect to some extent. I found that helped me immensely--it also helped my son because he didn't have to get his info from the other prisoners--who routinely spread bad info--from ignorance or just to get someone's goat.

Anneies, your are very right! The great thing about PTO is the having so much access to information! And it's mainly first hand information so it's really accurate. This has helped me so much because otherwise I would be pretty much in the dark.

Julianne, tell me about it (my husband having an odd DIN#) LOL. But that's just our luck... :) I'm excited for you about your visit! :) At least one of us can get to see our hubby and maybe shed some light on how the visits are.. hehehe.

Well, talk to you all later! :) Thanks again... you guys are life savers. :)
