DOC Considers Transporting More Prisoners

Created Feb 28 2006 - 1:17pm

The recent escape of a prisoner who was being transported by Cascade County deputies led to a state discussion about who should be responsible for transporting incarcerated people. The Montana Department of Corrections is interested in transporting more people. The DOC currently transports 47% of incarcerated people in the state. County governments, the Federal Marshals, and a private company called TransCor transport the rest. In June, the contract with TransCor ends, and the DOC will take over the company’s transportation responsibilities. No other decision about transportation has been made, and legislators want to know how much it will cost.
