ARE YOU SENDING THE NOVEL AS A BOOK OR AS LOOSE PAGES? I DO NOT THINK YOU CAN SEND A WHOLE BOOK ANYWAYS. I HAVE MAILED QUITE A FEW THINGS IN A DAY BUT I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING FOR SURE ABOUT A WEIGHT LIMIT. DIRTY CARTOONS AS IN WORDS AND/OR PICTURES? I DO NOT THINK THAT THEY WILL LOOK AT THE CARTOONS. UNLESS IT'S A NAKED BODY, BUT AS A CARTOON, I'M NOT SURE ON THAT. THEY WILL SEND IT BACK OR JUST REMOVE IT IF IT IS TOO X-RATED I GUESS. SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT KNOW SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT THE MAIL.

YOU MIGHT HAVE TO CALL HIS PRISON ON WEIGHT LIMITS. BUT DON'T TELL THEM IT'S A BOOK. OR MAIL IT IN A FEW DIFFERENT ENVELOPES. THE CARTOON I'M NOT FOR SURE, I JUST DON'T THINK THEY LOOK AT ALL THE MAIL, THEY JUST LOOK INSIDE OF IT. PUT IT IN THE MIDDLE, NOT ON TOP, MAYBE. I HAVE SENT PILLOWMAIL LETTERS AND THEY ARE X-RATED AND HE ALWAYS GOT THOSE.

You can only send 30 pages in one envelope. I sent a 32 page letter one time and got it back because it was over the limit.

I'm not sure if they will reject the cartoons....it depends on how closely they look it.......since you can't send more than 30 pages, they will probably fan thru the whole thing. More than likely they will reject them.

I have never heard of a weight limit or a page limit. I have mailed my husband his transcripts and they weighed over 30 pounds. I easily send over 100 pages at times and have never had a problem. I do count the pages and put the number in between my first and last name as I have had things come up missing. As for the cartoons if they see them he will not get them.

NOW I'M REALLY CONFUSED. WHAT TO DO?

There's a difference - LEGAL mail such as transcripts can get thru and cannot be limited, but PERSONAL mail such as letters, etc are limited.....I don't know WHY I just know it is. I'm assuming its to make things easier for the mail room people to go thru.

AND more than likely, if the cartoons are deemed inappropriate, they may reject the whole package and he will have to pay to have it mailed back to you.

As for books, this is from the MDOC website:

Sending Property
------------------------
For the most part, approved property must be purchased by prisoners through the prisoner store or ordered from approved vendors. Members of the general public may purchase allowable books, magazines and other publications, provided the publications are new, not used, and they are sent directly to the prisoner from an approved Internet vendor. The approved Internet vendors are:

Amazon.com

BarnesAndNoble.com

Borders.com

EdwardRHamilton.com

SchulerBooks.com

Waldenbooks.com

Walmart.com

I sometimes buy art or drawing books or magazines that are on sale or at garage sales. Since I can't send them too him, I send 2-3 pages at a time in a letter. I've never had any rejected.

go to the libary, get some magazines and look in the back. there is a host of things you can send for, for FREE. now a days you sign up on the computer so it's fast too! some prisons don't allow "junk" mail.

Have to say, I've never had anything rejected due to size, length or weight, although the weighter stuff is all legal paperwork.

I don't know if any of you have it, but all the information you will ever need can be at your fingertips in your own home by buying a CD Rom called "Corrections Law on Disc".

It costs $50. You can get them from here.....

http://www.crimapp.com

I bought one and it was the best 50 bucks I ever spent.

Every OP, PD, Director's Memo and dictat is on that disc.

It also has lists of what is allowed and is not, including banned publications.

You'll need Adobe Acrobat to open it because they are scans of the actual forms/policies.

But the greatest thing for me is that my man doesn't have to wait their time when he wants a policy or something, he just asks me and I sent it.

The men in Ad Seg don't get much time in the Library and also the guards tend not to "hurry" when getting Ad Seg guys their requests so this is a great resource.

The other thing that's great about it is that it has an entire copy of the Hearings Handbook on there so if your man needs it for a Hearing, you can print it off and send it in.

Prisoners are entitled to a copy, but rarely get one or else just get parts of one because it is so long.
