I'm looking to buy a new digital camera and I'd love to hear some suggestions! Any bad experiences with certain cameras? Are you exceedingly happy with a certain one? Let me know! I want to buy one before the Ohio G2G on 11/13! :) Thanks in advance!

I absolutely adore my Canon digital camera. My parents got me one for my birthday this year, and I love it!

It's a Cannon PowerShot SD 110 Digital ELPH, 3.2 megapixels. It's really cute and you can also take videos with sound. I've taken a video for up to 2 minutes, but you can probably take it for longer, I don't know how long it is before it runs out. But I would definitely recommend this camera. The cost was about $400 plus a memory card- not cheap, but a really good buy.

I have a Hewlett Packard. When I bought it it came with a printer I think it was around $300-400 on sale. I love it! It is so easy to print out your pics instead of going to get film developed. Especially for the "sexy" pics you send to your man ((if you send any at all!)) Happy Hunting!

Those of you who responded...thank you! One last question... Can you use rechargeable batteries with the camera?

I have a Kodack, and I love it! I can use recharchable batteries with mine, it sets on the dock to charge. And, if the those batteries run low for some reason, I can switch to regular ones in a pinch. If you can, I would suggest purchasing a memory card. I keep up to 100 pictures on one, and they are so easy to take anywhere to print. Lots of times people want a copy of a photo, I just take the memory card to Walmart or somewhere and print them up which ones they want. Or even better, a lot of times I just make an extra cd of the pictures for someone. Then they can print them themselves.

I suggest buying a video camera/digital camera it cost about the same as just the camera, especially with Christmas coming up I'm sure you can get a good deal. My parents have the JVC Video/digital camera and it works great!!!!

i have a kodak easy share, like mrsford, it sits on a dock to charge, it has rechargable and i can also use regular batteries if need be! it takes awesome quality of pictures and very easy to upload, share, and print! my dad can even use it which is very unusual cause he is so not smart with new technology at all LOL. he can't even send an email the correct way.

I have a Sony Cybershot and it works great. It uses Lithium Batteries though and those can be hard to find.

It does also take short videos as well but I am not to sure how to use that part. Also it has an automatic timer so you can get in the picture yourself.

I had to learn how to use it because my husband always used the camera and I did the picture downloading and printing. I have since had to learn how to use it and it is pretty easy to use.

I think they cost about $300.00 or so, you can find them on sale for cheaper.

Ok, I want a digital camera--but which one?

My sister in law has the kidak easy share but it only prints out on size pic. I want all size pics. I also want it to have to base (?) that you put the camera in and press a button and it prints out. Where it doesnt have to be hooked to the computer.

Any suggestions?

I got a Canon Powershot S410 Digital Elph and I love it! It was about $260, I think. Check out the Dell website because they're always running great deals :)

I have the Kodak Easy Share and true, it only kicks out the 4x6's, but with a memory card you can go to a Walgreen's or some other place that has the picture maker and put the card in and make any sixe you want. It's pretty reasonable todo it this way too.

The Kodaks and the Canons are the best cameras..You can also print out any size picture if you get a regular printer that prints out photos.

I have a Kodak Easy Share and love it. I first bought a Pentax Optio, it took great photos but had nothing but problems with it. The Kodak's software is very easy to use as well. I shopped around for 3 months or so before I finally decided on one.

One thing I would suggest is to get a camera with optical zoom as well as digital zoom.

I've had 2 kodaks I took them both back. The first one died pretty quickly I didnt have the charging dock, i was constantly changing batteries. I took it back. A few months later I got a newer model with all the extras pictures came out good but the camera would get stuck and not work so I took it back. I got a canon elura digital/camcorder it takes beautiful 4x6's. I bought my boyfriend (I'm divorced now, its been awhile since I've posted on pto) a pentax optio for his b day, I like his camera more then my canon it's 3.2 mp and I got it for a good price 129.00. I just bought myself the new sony t7 I needed something small i could keep in my purse or pocket I hated carrying the camcorder around. So far I like it it was too much money 545.00 with tax. It doesnt have as much optical zoom as my camcorder but the pics come out really clear.

The Kodak easy share is to big and bulky. I hate when i have to carry it. The pictures are not that sharp either. but the softwarer is easy to use. I don't suggest it.

Generally... I like Canon products. A lot. If the end result will be prints (vs. just "web" use), I'd shoot for AT LEAST 2 megapixels, ideally 3.2 or higher. Also, the more *optical* zoom the better. I get amazing results from my Canon G2, a 4MP camera from a few years ago, with a good lense (even though I wish it had more than 3x optical zoom). Good luck!

My husband purchased a Kodack digital camera for me for my birthday a couple of years ago, and I love it! It is user friendly (and that is a good thing) and I am able to transfer and print pictures at my leisure. A lot of times I think it is just what you have used and gotten used to. Good luck and have fun when you get your digital camera. I have a blast with mine. I also make cd's of all my pictures so I can pass them on, and not worry if anything happens to the originals. And I am able to keep all the cd's in a case by themselves so I know exactly where they are.

I read the other threads but have a few more questions.

If you have a memory card you can store up to 500 or so pictures, and then take the card to Walgreens or where ever and print any size you want, right?

Am I able to download pictures from the camera to the computer? Does that require the memory card, or a USB cable?

Is there photo editing programs for the computer?

Do you all suggest I get a good printer, or a printing dock that prints 4x6's? The reason I ask this is because this camera is my boyfriends v-da gift and I plan to make him stuff and send it to him. I want to know which one I would benefit from?

If you have any other infor or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

I can answer some ;)

When you buy the camera it should come with the necessary cable to put the pics on your computer. I don't put a lot of them on my computer - when I print pics at Walmart I have a CD made with the pics on it.

There is usually photo editing automatically on your computer, but I'm sure there's extra progams you can purchase.

Personally I very rarely print pics because the paper and ink is very expensive.. its cheaper to take them to Walmart, etc. My HP printer does a fair job.

Hey thanks. When you take your pix to Walmart and they put it on a disk, exactly what are you taking them? The memory card? If so aren't you scared something will happen to it while you leave it there?

Yes you can take the memory card to anywhere that develops pictures and get them printed in any size. Also you can have those pictures put on disk.

About the memory card, it all depends on the megabyte of the card and what pixel the picture is, for example I have a kodak easyshare digital camera 4.0 megapixel. The memory card I have in it is 256mb and so far I have over 100 pics saved to my memory card and it says i can save up to 300

Get a good printer or printer doc. When I got my camera it came with the printer doc and the pics that come out are awesome.

If your camera didn't come with a cable to connect to your computer then you can buy one pretty cheap.

OK, here's my amateur opinion... :p

I just bought an Olympus 5.1 megapixel camera at Sears a few weeks ago and I love it. It came with the cord and about 3 disks for photo editing, collages, etc. I bought more memory for it as well, but I got it all for under $200. I wanted one of those printer docks you asked about, but I needed a new printer anyway so I just bought an HP at Walmart for less than $150. It prints beautiful pics. I can take the pics, edit them, and print them in any size all in about 15 minutes. The only drawback to it, like mrsd said, is the photo paper and ink can get pretty expensive.

Good luck with his Valentine's Day present!

I have a pixma IP6600D from Cannon as my picture printer It was real reasonable and the ink is in 6 separate cartridges so you don't replace the colors you don't use. I still take "normal" pictures to have them printed at walmart or were ever is a good sale. But the "sexy" pictures I do at home. The pictures from home are perfect.

For most people, taking your pics to walmart is the most cost effective way to print digital pics. Being a graphic designer and amateur photographer, it is actually cheaper for me to print pics out at home because of the volume of pics I take. The capacity of your memory card depends on a couple of factors, some cameras have a resolution setting. On a low resolution setting, you will be able to store more images on a card at the cost of quality prints; and of course, the amount of megabytes on the card. The number on the card is not exact because the card has to retain formatting info for pics to be written to the card. So 256mb is actually 254 or 253. No big loss.

Inexpensive programs can be purchased for basic photo editing. They remove red eye, crop pics, resize, and you can even do basic repair and cutting/pasting. Also, if you do store pics on your computer, pics take up a lot of space. I have about 10gb of pics myself. It's better and safer to store them on cd's or dvd's. I back all of mine up on dvd-r's.

Yes you should have a cable for the camera to connect to the pc through a USB port. This way you can transfer images to the pc for retouching or archiving. If you have any questions, I have been a phtographer for about 15 years (since high school) and have been using digital exclusively for the last 5 years.

Good luck and happy shooting (photos that is!;))!

thanks guys im going to buy one for him today. But still dont know what I am getting. It will probably be a kodak easyshare. I'm still a little confused on how to take it to walmart or where ever. What if I have only 2 pix I want printed? Can i do that? Or do the print everything off the memory card?

mrsdragoness
02-04-2006, 03:27 PM
When you take your memory card to Walmart, etc., you only print off the pics you want. You just load the card into the machine and choose what you want to print. You don't leave your memory card with them. Once you are done you pull out your card take it with you and come back later for the printed pics.

Thanks for your help. I bought a Kodak EasyShare CW330. So far I am amazed with it but what is a good website I can go to inorder to do grapics and stuff with the pix. I know how to crop and edit them, but I want to maybe change the backgrounds and add some words. I would like to make a collague sort of thing.

I'm not sure of any websites that offer photo editors that will allow you to cut out backgrounds and such. There is an open source program (free) that is pretty powerful but has a bit of a learning curve...it's called GIMP and it's like Adobe Photoshop (my weapon of choice). Maybe someone knows of something easier to use...

if you have the money and want a really great digital camera, may I suggest the Nikon D70. With the larger memory cards and an additional lens you can take incredible action shots as well as stills. If you would like to see some examples, you can view my web site that I created for my son's baseball team. All the pictures on the site were taken by me using the D70. Keep in mind when viewing them that I had to reduce the size from the original so some have lost a little quality but all in all, this is a superior camera that is easy to use. You get the options of a SLR but convenience of digital. It is one awesome camera. Total with extra lens will run around $1500. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I totally agree. The 3.2 megapixel will offer good quality at home prints. And I wish I would have bought a bit more optical than my 3x. The one feature I recently found that I think is really great is the video out connection. This allows you to quickly view your pics on your tv thru your video in connection on your vcr.

ps Pict-bridge enabled is also a nice feature if you ever plan on buying a photo printer. It makes it all ultra simple and that's what its all about. I believe in the KISS school of photography.

I think Kodak has great deal for about $150 or less, both my friends have on and recently took one to Europe. She only bought a memory card for more storage but most cameras hold up to 50 or more pictures. I saw Europe through her cam...

I have a Canon, Pentax and Fuji camera all digital, BUT I LOVE the FUJI Finepix one, it comes with everything and most of the time the deals are terrific, the one I have has the docking station, cables, software, re-chargable batteries, the battery charge and case, I upgraded the disc for it and can get almost 700 pix at the lower pixel setting but anyways. Just upload from camera to like photobucket and your good to go :)
OH and I got it all on sale for less than 175.00 :D

Good Luck on your choice, I'm sure you will love any you get.
